sherrie johnson is here with the story about motivation and perseverance. >> reporter: well, they are known as the blackhawks. shaft hunter's son plays on the team and he often sponsored this. this team was awarded the u.s. club soccer region one championsch it was devastating to lose hunter, through determination and perseverance, they made it to a national competition and for six years the group of boys worked towards a goal of getting the opportunity to compete at the national level. now, they have it. the only issue is they must raise about 30,000 dollars to attend that competition. and they need your help to get there. >> not everybody makes it this far, and this team behind me has worked so hard, unbelievably hard, and to give them the opportunity to go against the best teams in the united states would be a milestone for the blackhawks. i am sure other teams would want this and we are asking that they get the due respect they deserve to go out and show that they can prove to be one of the best in the united states. >> we are dedicated. we work hard. we've had hopes and dreams ab

we persevere and not to win, but rather, not to lose open space, and glorious trees, and opportunity for a new small part, a famous softball playground, news of our icons, and confidence in our elected officials. who doe>> this is the third pare seen us lose. the third part has less open space than any other district in the city as far as i know. when i was the organizer, we have an open space funds committed for the proposition at the time. and the city delayed buying it until it went up and out it is a condo. there is a place dedicated on top of the broadway tunnel. that we supported. and one day, the supervisors saw it is said that it could be housing. housing could be built anywhere. this was a really important civic space, dislike triangle park. we lost that, too. i was down to a meeting where some people were saying that it should be condos. we cannot afford to lose this. it is an important part of the streetscape, that everybody is passing. everybody who drives by there will see it. it is a little triangle across from washington spare -- square park. this is really important t

the principles that the practice, the compassion, the vision, the perseverance, are all those same kind of values and principles that i know are being practiced within the iranian american community today as well. whether you want to see a green iran or whether you want to help participate in the civic process in california or in your own city, this is what is very heartwarming, by us coming together on a night like this. i very much appreciate all the dedication that has been applied in making these nowruz events as special as they are. i also would like to say that we would like to have -- we like to have fun. it is really the best part of introducing what nowruz means. that is why over the last six years, we have had art shows in my office. we would have exhibits down here, supported by the mayor, and introduce it to people exactly how we like to celebrate, through the arts, with great food, civic engagement, and it is wonderful to see, and it really helps us appreciate just what an incredible holiday this is. i want to thank everybody for being here today. it is a great pleasure to

gerald is also praised for his perseverance and compassionate speaking out against violence. he recently completed the program at city college where he focused on green technology and will soon transferred to louisiana state university. he will be missed. [applause] [applause] lauren dangerfield, 16, has led the forefront of campaigns for people winning in time of rights. -- employment rights. she also institutionalized ethnic studies. she is working to build more awareness on working to bridge the gap between ecology, race, and community. [applause] [applause] lucky fisher travis, 17, is a youth supervisor with new ideas. he strives for greatness and also pushes and support this project leaders to envision britain is in themselves. -- greatness in themselves. [applause] [applause] michellechu, 17, is a committed youth board member and on the youth empowerment advisory board. she is a college-bound ambassador in march from mentor school, where she is a wonderful model tutor. michelle is a responsible and motivated later working to bring you up voice to her community. because it has to go through civil service review and it is going to be difficult, but we're going to persevere. >> i take it this will be coordinated or you will work with the guidance, or will we bring in a consultant to address the needs? >> we have some people in house that will do the preparation of the documents. the majority of the work would be done outside, but then we have to do quality assurance and make sure the indexing is correct so we can actually find those documents. we are in a situation where we are running out of room in our building and for our records, we have to go forward into digital. >> i cannot emphasize enough with our city and within the bay area here being technologically rich, how backwards our system can be, not only from the standpoint of retrieval, but also from compartmentalization storage which could be easily be done. >> it is interesting, when you look at the five-year plan for the committee on information technology, there are a lot of projects throughout the various departments to do all electronic data management systems. we are not the only ones in this

i like to write about groups of people who persevere and make a life on their own aside from what the general culture is doing. i find that i don't consciously sit down and do that but it happens. in this particular book something that has fascinated me is sumo and sumo wrestlers and how they get so big and what it's like in their culture. one of the brothers becomes an sumo and that's why it's a big book! [laughter]. >> do you think that -- being a woman who is in women have been oppressed -- i don't know if they are now or not, dou think that has stimulated you in your writing coming out of that? you specifically and in general, do you feel like a lot of women have been stimulated by being part of an oppressed class? >> good question. >> very much so. i will try to answer a, b, c. for me, i know that the first thing i began to think about when i thought i wanted to write a novel was that i wanted to write about my culture. and because i had grownup in the chinese culture i wanted to write about china. i wanted to find out more about myself because of i was raised in the bay area and
