become a physician to help her community and it's an incredible story of how like her father she's persevered. this girl is from the afghan border valley of about 4,000 people. she was the first girl to get an education in our village. the communities there are somewhat proactive about girls education, it was difficult for her at first. the boys through publs at her at first. later on a couple of teachers didn't want to teach her because she was female. in high school some of the boys stole her notebooks because they didn't want her to graduate. but she did. there's no medicine or clinic or hospital here. before she started working in 2000 in this valley, five to 20 women died in childbirth every year so. she went to two years of training and cost us about $800 and her pay is just over a dollar a day and not one women has died since she's come back and is working there. and now i'll jump forward a bit. when we get hundreds of letters in our office and e-mails and some of the most powerful e-mails are those from our armed forces serving in afghanistan and sometimes iraq. recently i got an e-ma

they struggled and persevered and conquered so many obstacles that many of us never, ever see in light. well, we just got word this morning that len passed away from cancer. expiptd to come to the -- and i wanted to come to the floor and remember her and the great work that she has done, which i'm sure will be carried on by joe, her husband, and all of those who've been inspired by our visit. to think that this woman would go to one of the poorest places on earth and dedicate her life to help others should inspire every single one of us. mr. president, -- madam president, lynn lucy was like a another 400 employees of heal africa and to thousands and thousands of women, children, and even men for whom heal africa was their only source of quality professional medical care. her death this weekend due to cancer is a terrible loss for goma, it's a terrible loss for the democratic republic of congo and or africa. it's a terrible loss for every single one of us. we need to make certain that what she gave her life to does not end but continues. we have to make certain that her heroic efforts c

both of whom ago, long with their other -- both of whom, along with their other siblings, have persevered through this very, very difficult time. doug was in the seventh grade when bob disappeared. this year he will graduate from hietion on his way to college. he's grown athletically and academically and has grown to almost his father's height. bob will be shocked at how tall doug is. but he will be even more proud of all that his son has accomplished. samantha, bob's daughter, was in high school when bob disappear disappeared. and in just a few weeks, she'll graduate from college. samantha's been a resident advisor and a proud member of her sorority. she interned at disney, where she hopes to work after graduation. and, again, when her father returns, he will be so proud. so to honor bob's children and standing in solidarity with one of their own, the society of former special agents of the f.b.i. will award to doug and samantha scholarships to assist with the cost of college. i want to thank that society, those agents that have protected us so much over the years. i want today to thank
