this just into cnn, the uvalde, texas school board voting to fire school district police chief pete arredondoorcement waited more than an hour entering classrooms. 19 children and two of their teachers were killed in the attack. cnn shimon is in uvalde tonight. how did they come to this decision tonight. >> reporter: it's something that took months really and weeks, don. it started after the local texas local officials here, congressional officials finished their report where they really laid sort of blame on all of law enforcement but this idea that pete arredondo was in charge of the scene and he should have taken more action. of course, video was released from inside the hallway of the school room of the school and then also that body cam footage released where you see pete arredondo standing around at one point, trying to negotiate with the gunman. so it was all of that that eventually led us to here and really, in the end it was really the families and the community that was fighting so hard for accountability and finally, here, the school board tonight making this decision to fire him.

pete arredondo did not do the job he needed to do that day, and other officers fall in that category, and these accountability is, you know, the seeking of accountability, dps is doing a review of their troopers, the police department in uvalde is doing the same. so i don't think this is the end of that conversation around accountability. >> parents who lost their children that day say that the firing of the chief was a good first step, but they have so many unanswered questions about the police response that day, and why more wasn't done, why officers didn't charge the shooter as we know is common police procedure ever since columbine in 1999. are those families ever going to get the answers they are so desperately asking? >> i think that what we laid out in the report was the abject failure to apply those trainings, to apply those principles. they had a plan. the district had a man in place to address an active shooter, and they didn't follow that plan. you know, and that's where we have to go from -- we have to take that base of facts and now we need to hold people accountable. the
