be something that can get more serious but not just here in tampa bay but a similar scene saint pete beachclearwater beach, treasure island. this is where you watch all of this unfold to get to a significant threat for tampa b bay. >> jane: how quickly do you think this water came in? we saw this push the last couple of hours. but coming down the road easily 2 feet of water by the barrier. >> i think it was just in the matter of the last few hours. we had very intense rain band but now the active heavy rain has pushed past us action the water is coming up, very quickly as i'm standing here. with all that wind it has picked up and grown in strength over the last two hours, it has created a raging river looking at the waves we are seeing. i did happen very very quickly. no telling how quickly the entire intersection. >> jane: how close are you to structures off of bayshore boulevard? what is the possibility of seeing buildings and homes take on some of this water at that level? >> it is not out of the realm of possibility. sorry. i keep checking a very attentive to where the water is where w

pete beach. what is your experience like over the last couple of hours? >> you know, the weather has been dramatically fluctuating. intense wind and rain and heavy downfall a couple minutes ago. we were drenched and now we have dry air and direction of the wind has been shifting and most notable is the water behind me. the gulf consumed this beach and made way into the dunes where i'm standing and receded dramatically and noticeably in the last couple minutes. waters, wind and rain is fluctuating by the moment. we have seen reports by officials, i believe the sheriff's office says there is flooding in st. pete beach. i believe i can see some much the water from the gulf making its way over into some of the residential and commercial areas on the main streets. as the sun comes up, we'll be able to give better picture or understanding of the potential flooding in st. pete beach. this is zone a of evacuation, mandatory evacuation area because it is prone to flooding. >> early afternoon hours onshore

pete beach up near clearwater. a few shifts near a mile or more will bring in the impact of storm surge pretty quickly. the clearwater beach reading keeps rising, 2.9 feet now. we have our bob van dilen on the beaches there, been showing how the water's crashed up on the barrier walls onto the sidewalks. they've closed off a portion of the road there right along the beaches. this, you know, even before we see that full southwest shift into clearwater beach, that's expected to happen as idalia continues to push a little bit further up to the north, but to see numbers this high already, this coinciding with the high tide, too which is already making the problem worse, is going to be a real tough stretch as we open up the rest of the day today. >> ian: jane, i was speaking with cody behind me in weather command. the hurricane hunters are in the storm and they're finding a pressure which is probably somewhere high in the 940's, somewhere around 948. keep in mind with the last update we got last hour at 1:00, minimum ce

pete beach. u are looking at still water, it is part of the gulf coast here and a little more inland, impacts are more bizarre than what you would expect to see along the beach during a hurricane of this magnitude. idalia packing a punch as you watch really what the winds are doing creating waves and sending them inland and debris line out lining how far that water has got ebb up to thises point. we are two hours away from high tide. there is chance we could see additional foot of water. we have city of tampa police here blocking the road trying to keep people who maybe are getting up this morning thinking worst is over from getting in their cars or trying to walk through the water. you never know what is in there, debris, power lines that could pose a hazard to you and strength of waves coming onshore are impactful and bizarre for this particular area. we have barrier islands closed, major bridges are closed because of how strong wind gusts are. we have all these factors very much at play despite

pete beach on the barrier island west of st. the mandatory evacuation zone. mayor, thank you so much for joining us. what do you know about the safety of your residents? did most people leave? are you doing rescues? give us an update. >> yeah, for the most part most of our residents left. we're in evacuation zone a, which is the highest risk for flooding and we had severe flooding here with these first 4 to 5 feet so most of our residents, from what i can tell did evacuate. >> is that about what you expected? what are you doing to deal with it right now? is it just a matter, frankly, of waiting until it's safe enough to go out and do assessments? >> yeah, we actually have a meeting in about an hour to go city wide with our fire department and public works to see what the situation looks like, coordinated with the pinellas county sheriff to talk about reopening the island, late evening or early afternoon. >> we talked at the pinellas county sheriff and he said this is what he saw when he was out today, let me play that for you. >

beach? >> you know, we felt about 40 mile per hour gusts. we had that in saint pete. that was about an hour ago and that last rain band went through. this is feeling a little stronger even though we're kind of funneled in. i'm in the open but there's some treesen a a couple buildings. but you can see when it picks up. hurricanes are weird. when you're standing in them, it's not a constant wind in your face. it kind of blows at you, lets you gofundme blows at you, lets you go like that. so it's a little rocking. so far's not rag shifting me off my feet yet but with these rain bands coming in, if we get a 50 or 60 you'll see me rocking and rolling just a little bit. but so far jane 41 is the highest gust i've seen and that was at the airport just down the street. >> things will continue to go downhill from here watching the wind shift high tide coming in about a half hour to an hour sore so and that could spell trouble. >> we're already watching the higher than normal tides as you mentioned because of the astronomical tide but with the push of water from the offshow flo

saint pete beach was under mandatory evacuation and from our assessment it seems most people evacuatedr just stayed inside. this morning as the sun came up there were neighborhoods and homes that had low level flooding but fortunately the water receded rather quickly here today. we're told a combination of hurricane idalia's storm surge combined with the blue moon ace high tide pushed water from the gulf of mexico into the neighborhoods here but fortunately no major injuries or loss of life reported here tonight. as floridians do, trace, you know, they recover and they push through these types of storms and tonight a lot of the focus remains now up to the north in georgia and the carolinas where this storm may have had a much greater impact, trace. >> trace: we will check on that, matt finn live for us in saint pete thank you. let's bring in pj brashear volunteer, and bryan stern, founder bryan stern rather, founder and ceo of the project dynamo. to you first bryan, i know that you were anticipating a lot of high water rescues it didn't quite happen. what do you think is attributed to

matt fin is joining us now live from saint pete beach. not far. a little further up from tampa as well. >> how are the conditions there, matt? >> we have had really steady consistent winds as you can see for hours now and throughout the night the conditions here dramatically fluctuated several hours of heavy downpour, drenching rain at any moment the rain can pick back up here. perhaps you can make out behind me the gulf of mexico has been pushed in maybe 30 feet closer to where i'm standing. water line has been dramatically pushed inward and we have seen the pinellas county sheriff reporting flooding here in saint pete. and if you're familiar with this area it's a very popular tourist destination. very large resorts. hotels and motels up and down the beach where i'm standing right now. the area really is a ghost town right now. this is zone a in the evacuation area, mandatory evacuation. and it appears that most people heeded the evacuation warnings in this area. the governor has said if you have not evacuated this area by now, if you go to reach

pete beach resident barb shuler. thanks for joining us. did ride out the storm from the bottom floor of a two-story apartment building. what was that experience like? >> i did, and it was a bit harrowing, but we were prepared. and we set up our apartment to actually ride the storm out. >> you took some video from outside of your apartment, which is pretty close to the sea wall. how high did the water end upcoming up for you? >> well, it went over the sea wall, and we actually saw waves coming over the sea wall. it was a bit harrow -- i was inside my apartment, and we did board up our apartment with sandbags, we were prepared. but it was -- i actually heard -- it felt like the beach was right outside my apartment. but we did get a bit of breach of our efforts, but we were able to take care of it. we stayed. we took care of our apartment. and we succeeded and we're fine. >> good, glad you are fine. will you be able to stay in your apartment? what will the days ahead look like as the cleanup, you know, is under way? sounds like you took on so

we're here in tarpon springs, florida, which is about 36 miles north of saint pete beach. and clearly you can see in the town behind this this area really suffered significant flooding. i will say the water is slowly receding right now. in fact, the area that we're standing in is nowhere near what it was just hours ago. and also in addition to this, you can see there really is some significant damage that the community here is already coming out to inspect. this is a parking lot right here rather what was a parking lot. you can clearly see the that has come up as a result of the flooding here. now we talked to several people in this town and they tell us the flood waters that came early this morning from hurricane that. dalia really comparing it to that no-name storm that happened 30 years ago. a lot of folks here tell us that the storm surge is really what caught them off guard reporting in tarpon springs. i'm blake houston. >> and hurricane idalia's masses triggering a massive federal response. so right now, alexandra limon is joining us live from washington, d.c., with
