nbc news's pete williams, and white house correspondent geoff bennett. pete, what's the latest you're hearing on this. >> you covered it well with michael. we don't know whether they'll have another session with the attorney general or not. i think it also raises an interesting question about the deputy attorney general, rod rosenstein. here's the reason why. the attorney general recused himself. everyone saw that coming, apparently, except the white house, maybe some of the people at the white house and the president, because he was involved with the president's campaign. the justice department will say you can't investigate somebody if you were involved in their campaign. so that just seemed a equals a simple, that he'd have to step aside on the investigation. it fell to the deputy attorney general, rod rosenstein. if, in fact, it is correct that mueller wants to ask questions about obstruction of justice, about the firing of comey, potentially, jeff sessions is as much a witness as rod rosenstein was to that process. so what happens then? will the spec

we want to start with nbc justice correspondent pete williams as well as my colleague in the white house jeff bennett. pete, to you first, what can you tell us about this interview, i guess why it's significant? i guess sessions, the firing of the former fbi director would certainly be under tough scrutiny. >> the news here, peter, is when it happened. not that it happened. we always assumed that the special counsel eventually would get around to questioning jeff sessions for several reasons. but what we're told is it happened last week at the special counsel's office. that jeff sessions had his personal lawyer with him. chuck cooper. who's a former reagan administration official in the justice department and has since been a lawyer here in washington. we don't know what the subject was but we can assume it was two reasons. number one, jeff sessions was involved in the trump campaign, met several times with russia's ambassador. so to the extent mueller is wanting to know about connections between the trump campaign, if any, and the russians, sessions would be one person they would want to talk to. se
