on c-span. >> this year, nine-term representative pete hoekstra decided not to seek re-election and to run for michigan governor. he sat down with us for half an hour. is spending a half hour with us. he first came to congress in 1992 and back for the lame-duck session. that is it for you. what is that like? >> it is kind of liberating. it is a wonderful job but my wife and i and our family is excited about what the future may bring. >> you thought you had a bid for a public office. what are your future plans? >> we are looking at a number of different options. there are a number o different options out there. we are sorting through what those might be. it stems from perhaps working with a think tank, have stewing some tv and media analysis on that national security issues. those are the kinds of things we are considering right now. >> our goal is to talk about congress and recorded history with you. let's start with the response about what congress was like when you came here in 1993 versus what it is like today. what has changed? >> a lot of things are the same. i am not sure much ha

joining us now here in "the situation room," congressman pete hoekstra, republican of michigan and rankingks right now from releasing more information? >> it is next to impossible. i don't think that there is a way to stop wikileaks, the guardian or the spiegel or new york times from making anything else more public. >> so, if they are sitting on tens of thousands of documents no way for the u.s. to go through cyber activity to stop it? >> well, we have great cyber people, but what we can tell wikileaks are good for protecting the data they have, and if there is a cyber attack, this stuff will be released somewhere else. it will get out. >> you wrote a letter, and we have a copy here to the secretary of state hillary clinton and the director of national intelligence james clapper saying that you want to know what is going on, and you are not getting access to information that "the new york times" or al jazeera have -- >> or 500,000 people in the military have. yeah, we'd like to know what is in the documents and what is coming down the pike. what vulnerabilities are there? what security is

ranking member pete hoekstra of michigan and spoke with reporters following the hearing. this is 10 minutes. >> let me know when you are ready. let me just give you a few comments after the briefing that we have had on the leaky leaks material this morning. number one i think it is safe to say that again the administration and the executive branch confirms that the material that was leaked were censored and some -- foreign affairs foreign policies and i think we share the concern about the materials that are in the wikileaks database. the second thing is as i stated earlier, as i stated over the last week, the creation of this database in the first place was a huge mistake. the proper protocols and procedures were not followed when this database was established. as a matter of fact i'm not even sure that the protocol existed as to how you create a database of this size and the scope and make sure that the proper protections were put in place so that the material only got to the people who really needed access for this information. this was an accident that was waiting to

>> house intelligence committee ranking member pete hoekstra spoke recently about cybersecurity efforts in light of the wikileaks release of state department documents. his comments came as part of a daylong conference on iran's nuclear program. it was hosted by the foundation for the defense of democracy in washington. >> supports the kind of research and intellectual thinking that the foundation for the defense of democracy does. you know, i was recently in a congressional district in, actually, michele bachmann's congressional district, and they went through, and she raised $14 million for a congressional race. think about this. like, whoa. and this is from a guy who spent $45,000 in his first race in 1992 and beat the chairman of the national republican campaign committee, and that's now moved up to $14 million. but, you know, their campaign manager gave an overview as to where and what issues were most important in that campaign, and michelle's congressional district. jobs, economy, taxes, jobs, economy, taxes, jobs, jobs, jobs, and finally when you get down to the bottom here it's
