cnn's pete muntean is with us now. what is this about? issues with american airlines' largest regional carrier called envoy air. the faa says there's consistent evidence of problems with its pilots. it is an airline that millions have flown on, but might never know it. now new documents obtained by cnn detail a federal investigation into envoy air. it is the largest regional carrier for american airlines, operating smaller jets between small cities and major hubs. hundreds of times each day. this envoy flight that slid off a snowy chicago runway is one of nine cases in 2019 and 2020 that the federal aviation administration says showed serious problems with the pilots involved. in a letter to envoy's ceo, an faa investigator cites consistent evidence showing potential lack of are amanship, deeper than what spot training or counseling have been able to resolve. >> it's a big deal. it's disturbing. >> reporter: former ntsb managing director reviewed the faa warning and says incidents could have been much worse. the letter describes a flight

. >> cnn's josh campbell and pete muntean are covering this.bersecurity experts who say colonial early on did all the right things. they contacted the government agencies, they shut down some of their systems to limit the expanse of the attacks. so what are we learning now? >> what we're hearing is that, as you mentioned, they have not shared these vulnerabilities. and crisis response following a cyberattack, there are two phases. there's the what happened, the immediate threat, and we know that as you mentioned they brought in outside experts, members of the federal government in order to stop the immediate threat. we also know the fbi has sent out a flash alert which is basically the ones and zeros to other companies around the country to have them scan their own systems to ensure they don't have the same software on their computer systems. the problem is there's this other second phase, the how it happened. and what we're told from a top dhs official is those vulnerabilities, how these intruders got into that system, that information has not

let's get straight to cnn's pete mo muntean at reagan's national airport. what a difference a year and working vaccines make, at least two airplanes -- airlines, i should say, have postponed their plans to restart selling alcohol. tell us more about that. >> reporter: that's right, ana, there's been a huge uptick in these ugly incidents on board commercial flights as more people come back to traveling and american airlines thinks that alcohol only makes it worse. it just announced it is not resuming alcohol service like it planned to do starting in june. southwest airlines was the first airline to make an announcement like this, all coming after an incident where a flight attendant was seen on video getting punched by a passenger, the union that represents that flight attendant says she lost two of her teeth. it's flight attendants on the front lines enforce rg this federal transportation wide mask mandate, and federal officials say now is not the time to put them in jeopardy, as they are just trying to do their job. >> they're doing their job. they are fol

pete muntean is with us. this has become such a big problem.on flights that tsa and faa are actually having a meeting about it momentarily? >> reporter: yeah, that's because people can't follow this transportationwide mask mandate. the tsa is still requiring masks on planes, trains, buses, boats and also here in terminals to make sure people follow that rule, you know, it's so serious because the tsa has now investigated 1,300 cases of those violating that rule. and it's 60 tsa workers have been assaulted by passengers, so it's a really serious problem. the faa, federal aviation administration, also taking this seriously as well. it says there have been 2,500 cases of unruly passengers since its zero tolerance policy went into effect in january. the federal government taking this so seriously, it's actually fining passengers, 22 fines have been announced by the faa. the most serious, the most recent ones, $15,000 in fines. so, very high. and the federal government says now is not the -- the federal government says now is not the time that peopl

joining me is cnn's pete muntean with some really interesting reporting. ne has a story of a trip cancelled by the pandemic. and what's so interesting is the new estimate that $10 billion are held by would be travelers in travel credits from airlines, and now two high profile u.s. senators are telling ten different airlines that they should give cash refunds to you for those credits. senator ed markey, and richard blumenthal have written these ten airlines to say, quote, americans need cash in their pockets to pay for food, housing and prescriptions. the department of transportation has received 107,000 consumer complaints since the pandemic began. that is a big uptick. and of that number, 89% have been about refunds. the senators say that if airlines don't give refunds, then they should at least make the deadline on using these credits indefinite. united airlines and american airlines have both pushed back their deadlines into 2022, but not all airlines have done that. and consumer advocates, people are actually returning to flying, because they have a dea

pete muntean in bethesda, maryland. the gas prices went through the floor last year.travel demand. what's so interesting is gas stations are worried they just might not have enough gas to pump. industry groups tell us the problem is with tanker trucks like this one. about a quarter of them nationwide are parked because of a shortage of qualified drivers. more qualifications and regulations during the pandemic. i talked to one of these big trucking companies out in oklahoma. 800 drivers in 15 states, and they've had to double their recruiting budget because of this looming problem on the horizon. it could have a big trickle-down effect. a shortage of drivers could mean a shortage of gas. >> we've been talking about a driver shortage in the industry for the better part of 20 years, but now you've got this pandemic ooh affect that's increased the issue. it could have a crippling effect on our economy. >> reporter: the price of a gallon of gas has gone up about 60% nationwide in the last year, and the concern is it's those vacation hot spots that could run out of gas firs

that, after friday already broke new pandemic travel records, let's get straight to cnn's pete muntean. break it down for us. >> reporter: this airport was a ghost town a year ago, now the tsa has screened more than 1.6 million people at airports across the country, just yesterday, compare that to the same day back in 2020, when only 350,000 people flew nationwide. the pandemic air travel records set only back on friday won 1.96 americans flew, maybe we could see the 2 million mark, a number we have not seen since march of 2020. the story not just about air travel. aaa expects 37 million meshs will travel 50 miles or more during this holiday weekend, 34 million of them by car, the numbers not that far off from where we were in 2019. those driving will face a bit of a rude awakening when it comes to gas prices, the highest they have been in seven years. the national average for a gallon of gas, $3.05, up a dollar from where we were a year ago, clearly a lot of people trying to take advantage of this first, quote/unquote maskless holiday of the pandemic but, remember, masks still require

as pete muntean reports they can get ugly. >> reporter: the newest problem facing pent-up demand for-up frustration in the skies with federal agencies citing a serious surge of infight flights. in a new letter, southwest airlines flight attendants say unruly passenger incidents are being abouting intolerable and more aggressive. these images from a southwest flight on sunday when a flight attendant had two teeth knocked out by a passenger according to their union. >> they seem to be almost angry before they step on board the aircraft and they are verbally attacking flight attendants and calling them names, pulling on their lanyards and getting aggressive. we have had to deal with almost riot-like incidents. >> reporter: even if you're fully vaccinated masks are still required on all forms of transportation and in terminals across the united states. the faa says it has received 2,500 reports of unruly passengers just this year. 1900 of them about mask compliance. >> started antagonizing other passengers. >> reporter: a crew member on this jetblue flight says an unruly passenger cut th

cnn's pete muntean gets the low down from the head of the faa. >> reporter: christine and laura, the those had becoming a sieve on commercial flights. it's a real problem it says. it just announced its biggest fine yet since rolling out a zero tolerance policy against unrule lie passengers. a delta passenger accused of repeatedly assaulting a flight attendant and trying to break into the cockpit now faces fines of more than $52,000. it is the latest of 17 such fines totaling more than $300,000. faa administrator steve dixon told me in an interview that this has been a real problem because the numbers just keep going up. the faa has received reports of about 1,300 unruly passengers on especially flights in recent months. the tsa screened more than 1.8 million people at airports across the country on sunday. a new record since the pandemic. about 70% of what numbers were before the pandemic. >> pete, thank you so much for that. $52,000 fine for some very bad behavior. >>> all right. failed inspections allowed a crack in a bridge connecting arkansas and tampa bay to go unnoticed for two

pete muntean has more on this.p travel demand because of the pandemic, when you talk about that, you can't not talk about road trips, the price has shot up 60% since this time last year and we're learning that gas stations may have a hard time just getting gas, so interesting that we're learning from industry groups the tanker trucks that bring gas to stations like this one, about 25% of those are now parked, the number has gone up in the pandemic, because the number of drivers has gone down, it's a highly qualified job, more retirements, more regulation on them, you know, i just talked to a big trucking company in oklahoma, 800 drivers in 15 states, and that company tells me it has doubled its recruiting budget to try and stem off this problem on the horizon. >> people are wanting to get out and trust me, everyone's tired of having to stay at home. so i think once more and more people get out that's only going to exacerbate the problem. >> reporter: so many more people are flying now as well. you know, the tsa say

our aviation correspondent pete muntean joins me from washington. i'm getting on a plane this afternoon with my family. so we'll all be masked. but it's going to be interesting at the airport to see, i don't know, and on the plane, what are people saying? are they annoyed? how are the airlines explaining this? >> we're going to have to see how this pans out. the cdc director walensky said there will be new travel guidance. it needs to consult with more agencies. but the message right now is clear. if you're fully vaccinated you still do have to wear a mask on board all forms of transportation. the tsa tells me the federal transportation wide mask mandate during the biden administration will stay in place. that means planes, trains, buses, boats and in terminals, until september 13th. it was just extended, was set to expire earlier this week. this is a key caveat here. and one that the head of the association of flight attendants tells me there should be no confusion about but we'll see how people react to this because the faa says there's been a big
