pete muntean, the hater of holidays. we'll check in with pete throughout the show.ws for certain cancer patients scaling back on aggressive treatments could actually provide some benefits without hurting their chances of survival. it's an approach called de-escalation. let's get to cnn's jacqueline howard. she has more on this. jacqueline, what are the benefits and what does the research show about this less is more a prech? >> kate, patients can avoid the serious side effects that can come with treatments and they're looking at which therapies may be unnecessary for the less aggressive cancers and one example of this in bone study, researchers looked at rectal cancer patients and looked at those who only received chemotherapy and compared them to those who received chemotherapy and radiation. the patients who received only chemo still had among them 80% of them were disease-free five years later. you see on the screen here, among those who had chemo and radiation, 78.8% of them were disease-free five years later. so you see, there are still similar outcomes among t

let's get to cnn's pete muntean. pete, you know, were things improving at all this morning?hat we have the flight aware misery map and it is true to its title, especially after yesterday. considering the fact that 1,700 flights were canceled, there's one big superlative that puts it in the top five for cancellations since memorial day and 9,800 flights were delayed. we have not seen this many delays this summer, 40% of all flights delayed on average an hour and ten minutes flights arriving to their destination. that is a lot of trouble for a lot of air travelers, especially on a sunday when the numbers are typically pretty big. a lot of folks coming home at the end of the weekend. the worst airports unsurprisingly, and we've seen this over and over again this summer, in new york, jfk, newark, laguardia. those are the real trouble spots and the faa says its short air traffic controllers there, but when this weather rolls through that's when the deck of cards really begins tumbling down. there was also a ground stop yesterday for flights going into boston locagan, also trouble

we have team coverage, pete muntean is tracking the travel chaos the storm has been causing.und in rockland county, new york. what is the situation there right now, polo? >> reporter: well, pam and phil, good morning to you. with that rain shifting to the north as you just mentioned that moons a break in the clouds here and an opportunity for recovery, but the impact certainly stim being felt. for example, you look behind me, that road block here on the palisades interstate parkway, that is detouring drivers here most of the day. if you've driven on it you know it's extremely busy, especially on a monday just mortgage of new york city. one of the most affected areas north of here were thosed into waters that proved deadly last night. >> look at the people's door. oh, my god. >> reporter: historic flooding slamming southeastern new york on sunday. >> it's up to my knees. >> i know. >> reporter: orange county officials say at least one woman died after she was swept away in floodwaters in the town of highlands. >> we have an emergency situation here in southern orange county, i

pete muntean has more. >> reporter: from severe weather to record-setting crowds, july 4th air travelt to the test. friday the tsa screened the most people at airports ever. 2.88 million. followed by 2.5 million people saturday and again on sunday. >> there are always situations, but this one i would have to say one of the worst. >> it has been a disaster. >> reporter: and transportation secretary pete buttigieg says delays are down after last week when united airlines canceled more than 3,000 flights and delayed another 8,000. more than any u.s. carrier. >> we're watching more severe potential for severe weather, that is what touched off all the problems. things look like they have quickly returned to normal for the system and united also appears to have recovered. >> reporter: in a new memo united ceo scott kirby says he's had conversations with buttigieg and committed to the partnership with the federal aviation administration which he initially blamed for delays. kirby says united will reassess its schedule in newark which even he shunned last week admitting to and apologizing for

cnn's pete muntean is here.specific incident here and how severe it was. >> you know, the nuts and bolts of this sound like pretty much every other turbulence incident we've been covering. it seems almost like they're on the rise. this flight was going from asheville, north carolina, descending into st. pete clear water airport. we know that paramedics met this flight at the gate. and we're going to play the air traffic control audio in a second where the pilots specifically asked for this. they knew right away that passengers on board were hurt. in fact, in some of the audio they say that some of the passengers were bleeding. there were about 197 people on board this flight. we know that the crew was hurt. they're especially at risk in incidents like this. we also know some of the passengers were hurt. we heard that soundbite where they said it looked like the ma matrix, people being thrown up to the ceiling. i want you to listen now to the calm of pilots radioing this in to air traffic control in tampa where t

pete muntean is live for us at reagan national airport. a record, pete.ng right now the calm before yet another storm? >> reporter: you know, things are relatively smooth today, brianna. think about where we were a week ago when airlines in the u.s. cancelled 2,200 flights. today they've only cancelled 98. just checked flight aware. the delay number keeps going up, cancellations not going up all that fast. even yesterday, airlines in the u.s. cancelled 600 flights in the u.s. when storms hit the east coast. things can change relatively quickly. and the faa is warning of ground stops for later today for flights going into new york, d.c., baltimore, charlotte, atlanta, all the way down to tampa and miami. so, the day is still relatively young. the good news is, though, we have turned the page from the big cancellations of last week. i want you to listen to transportation secretary pete buttigieg, who says that things are getting back on track. >> we're watching more severe -- potential for severe weather. that's what touched off all of these problems about

. >>> let's bring in cnn aviation correspondent pete muntean live in reagan national airport in d.c.xpectations were set in numbers of people screened by the tsa. did it meet the busy expectations? >> reporter: met the busy expectation, exceeded. the tas anticipated 2.82 million people. instead we saw 2.88 million people. that's not a high of the pandemic era. it is an all-time record. the highest number we have seen since december 1st, 2019, the sunday after thanksgiving. so these are huge numbers. the good news right now is that things are starting off relatively smooth but never say never. the day is still relatively young. i just checked flight aware, so far we have seen about 80 cancellations in the u.s. pails in comparison to what we saw yesterday. in fact, the numbers really ramped up as the day went on. and bad weather hit the east coast. we saw about 600 cancellations in the u.s. yesterday. although, last week was a lot worse. so we are on the track to getting a little bit better. one caveat here, though, the faa does warn that there could be ground stops today because of th

pete muntean is at reagan national airport. a rough dawn out there, or pretty good?know, things are going pretty smoothly today, jim, thankfully. the tsa says today will be a big day. sunday will also be a big day. look at the numbers. two million people screened by tsa in airports nationwide yesterday. 2.2 million the day before that. that is the slump. friday was the biggest day that tsa has seen ever. 2.88 million people. in fact, american airlines says it was the busiest the airline has been since july of 2019. the good news is that the cancellations are relatively low. 165 cancellations just now nationwide. yesterday for the full day, about 400 nationwide cancellations, but think back to last tuesday when 2200 flights were canceled in total. listen to scott kines. he says it's looking better than last week. >> never just assume everything is going to go great. have a backup plan just in case, but i think your odds are better of an on-time arrival this week than last week. >> reporter: faa is warning of ground stops popping up in denver, charlotte, atlanta today,

our friend, cnn aviation correspondent pete muntean is tracking the situation this morning. so pete, how bad is it? >> well, today is looking a lot better than it's looking from yesterday. we've got about 280 cancellations, about a thousd delays. we're about 15% of what we saw yesterday. 1,700 cancellations just yesterday. but get this. the number of delays, almost 10,000, 9794. those are the most flight delays we have seen all summer. 40% of all flights scheduled in the u.s. delayed. the average delay, flights arriving at our destination, about an average of an hour and ten minutes late. a lot of misery at airports across the countryesterday. the worst airports were in the new york area, unsurprising. newark, jfk, laguardia. there were ground stops there for most of the day. yesterday, at bostonogan, there was a ground stop instituted by the faa, saying that flights there can't get in, just because the weather was so poor, and the issues stretched all the way down to d.c. at reagan national airport. this is the blunt warning from united airlines ceo, scott kirby. remember, u

another round of wild weather that is fortsing thousands of flights to be canceled and we have pete muntean outside of washington, and how are things looking today, pete? >> you know, kate, the weather is looking out, and just looking at flight aware, and 463 cancellations already today after the more than 2,000 that we saw yesterday, and 8,000 delays, and that puts this in the top five for the worst days for cancellations since the start of this year, especially bad for all of those people coming home after the long holiday week, and tsa's 2.3 million people, and newark's airports especially hard hit, and laguardia, half of the flights hard hit-of the flights in and out, and at jfk, huge international hub, 1 in 5 flights canceled there as well. this hit boston, philadelphia, and reagan international with 20% of the flights canceled. this is what happened. the faa says that the weather moved through and blocked off the key flight routes and essentially blocking the on ramps, and off ramps to some of the busy airports and we are not out of the woods yet, and the faa stops in newark and bosto

cnn aviation correspondent pete muntean is with us now on this.>> it's really interesting because this is something that the airline industry is really concerned about in a big way, passengers being overserved, and we see these play out in assault incidents not just against flight crews but in this case, according to the federal lawsuit, against the passenger and her 16-year-old daughter. the suit says about a year ago, july 26th, 2022, they were on this eight-hour flight from jfk to athens, seated in the back of the plane near the galley, where the flight attendants work, in the middle section of the plane, a wide-body, so aisle seats again. so they said that this passenger was so drunk to begin with, and then the flight crew continually served him drinks according to this lawsuit. d in fact, one of the flight attendants, according to this lawsuit, even joked as this passenger ordered a drink that only an alcoholic would order a drink before the flight took off. and so this lawsuit essentially lays out that this passenger was served ten drinks, a

joining us on the phone is cnn's aviation correspondent pete muntean. what airports are we talking about? >> we are talking about a lot of airports. 1195 cancellations in the u.s. so far today. new york hitting hit especially hard again after we saw a lot of delays, more than 2000 just after last sunday and the last week of june we saw a meltdown at united airlines. this feeds into the story of travel misery that keeps happening over and over again this summer. especially for folks trying to come home on a sunday after the weekend and make it home for work. checking the faa status of airports come a a ground stop issued for logan. a ground delay also. departure delay for 75 minutes. we are talking our 15 minute delays leaving right there. newark, huge hotspot for these delays. ground stop there as well. jfk. new york getting hit hard. even florida. fort lauderdale, and miami. the faa says we could see ground stops as the day goes on in places like philadelphia, chicago o'hare, chicago midway, and also the major airports around d.c., dallas national, be

we have pete muntean joining us now. really unbelievable. thank goodness they both survived.d here? >> the passenger deserves so much credit here. a 68-year-old woman on board. and the 79-year-old pilot, she saved both of their lives in this crash landing. there's the video at the martha's vineyard airport. it's a single engine. hot little airport. $2 million. goes about 300 miles per hour. the ntsb is investigating what went wrong here, how this pilot had a medical emergency and what the nature of the medical emergency was. we're able to see from the flight aware track that the plane went around once and then flew around the airport two more times and then ended up like this. although, pretty good, they say any landing you can walk away from, not so bad. just sheared off one of the wings. mostly in one piece. that was pretty good. you can see the track here, though, how they circled the airport after they came from white plains in new york. only about an hour long flight. the investigators will want to know exactly what the nature of this medical emergency was and how this e

cnn aviation correspondent pete muntean joins us now. what is the ceo of united saying?ent tune. >> huge reversal. you can't understand this enough. this is so big from united ceo scott kirby in which he says that faa is now heroic. think back to not only a couple weeks ago, when kirby was putting the blame on the airlines melting down the last week of june, specifically on the faa, and its staffing issues at major air traffic control facilitiesp. in a memo to his employees slards with us, he said the faa failed us this weekend, the weekend of june 24th and 25th. now kirby saying the faa has been helpful over the last couple weeks, they are trying to make things right again, and in this first admission since this meltdown by united airlines, they had about 3200 flights canceled in june which was especially important leading up to july 4th, he's now saying that faa is trying to really help out the airline here. i want you to listen now to what he said. >> they deserve a lot of credit for what they've been doing because, you know, they're 54% staffed in new york and to hav
