i want to bring in cnn aviation correspondent pete muntean.s is a happy ending, everyone is okay, the packages are okay. what happened? >> what happened is good tv. that was an incredible landing. you see the sparks off that 757. that was a textbook belly landing. you see it sometimes in smaller airplanes and smaller airports, the landing gear malfunctions, they can't get it done. rarely do you see it on a transport category airplane as big as a 747. this fedex flight was leaving chattanooga, tennessee, going to fedex's big hub in memphis. quickly the flight crew realized there was an issue, they had an engineer unsafe flight. they were able to see the landing gear was malfunctioning on the crew alerting system they have in front of them, all the screens in front of them. they essentially took off straight, radioed air traffic control and flew around the chattanooga airport. they did something old school, came in for a bit of a fly-by to see if the air traffic controllers could see if the landing gear was, in fact, down. it turns out it was no

cnn's pete muntean joins us now. pete, he is facing a ton of charges now.re are you learning about this? >> one attempted murder charge for each person onboard that flight and these incredible new details are coming out after joseph emerson's appearance in an oregon court last night, kate. they told the story of a pilot in extreme distress who had told police he had been on mushrooms two days before this incident. this all comes from conversations that emerson had with police who met the flight on the ground in portland. this incident took place at 31,000 feet. emerson was off duty, seated in the jump seat, the small seat behind the pilots essentially reserved for other airline pilots who are deadheading. emerson said he reached up for two big, red handles at the top of the cockpit. those are the engine fire extinguisher handles that first cut off the flow fuel to the engines. emmerson told police he pulled those handles because he thought he was in a dream and wanted to wake up, then there was a struggle. the pilots jammed those handles back in, emerson bo

let's bring in pete muntean here.his happened on sunday. >> we now know the name, 44-year-old joseph emerson of california, we are also hearing from alaska airlines, we was an off-duty alaska airlines pilot. it was going from plainfield to san francisco, that was the plan but ultimately, they had to divert, because this off-duty pilot who is sitting in the jump seat, that is the third seat behind the pilot on the left, the first officer on the right, typically used by pilots to commute from one place to another, was trying to tamper with the flight controls. and we have heard from the faa and the airline here, that this pilot essentially tried to cut off the power to this embreyer 175 engine, you can see the pilot there on right, co-pilot on the left. i want you to listen to the air traffic control audio of the pilot who is still able to fly the airplane. they were able to subdue this off-duty pilot. listen to the calm here as they radio the seattle control center about this problem, saying they're going to come back
