cnn's pete muntean is joining us now. pete, the faa administrator, is making very clear there are significant issues here when it comes to boeing and this 737 max and that reporting from the new york times, it comes from a powerpoint presentation that it viewed only insult to injury after this fallout that boeing is >> facing after the 737 max nine door plug blood on january 5th, first, the national transportation safety board said that boeing would not produce paperwork when it comes to the work done and on that 737 max nine, that left the renton washington factory without the four critical bolts in place to hold the door plug on the airplane. now the faa is saying that it is found issues on boeing's production line part of the faa audit of boeing quality control triggered by the door plug block, faa administrator mike whitaker, set in a press coverage just yesterday that there are problems with what he calls plant hygiene. that means the order of the work is done also with tool management, which is an issue because tools

cnn's pete muntean joins us now. so pete, what do we know about this incident while passengers were describing this drop? but there's a bit of a mystery as to why this occurred. it sounds like a severe turbulence incidents, although there was a really interesting statement here from lad tam and i want to read you that it says there was a technical event during the flight that caused a strong movement of the plane. technical event leaves a lot of room for interpretation and investigators will want to know if something happened in the cockpit. was this an issue with the flight controls? was this an issue with the autopilot so a boeing 7807737, max, like during the alaska airlines door plug blowout two months ago, but even still, boeing says it's working together more information about this incident and it's standing by to support an investigation. this plane was going on to santiago, chile play and the latest data from flightaware shows it now remains in auckland a flight that continued was canceled. that's where first

an investigation of the incident, which left 50 passengers injured cnn aviation correspondent pete muntean is joining us right now. pete, this raises a lot of serious safety questions. what exactly happened here? >> it's important to note, well, but this investigation is still beginning and boeing tells us it's working on a statement, but if this account and the wall street journal is accurate, it is a significant new target for investigators. the account goes like this. the pilots of latam flight 800 were being served a meal while in cruise flight, two sources briefed on this investigation, say a flight attendant pressed a switch on one of these 78 sevens electrically powered pilot seats that slid the seat forward and into the controls, causing this plane to drop. this flies in the face of what passenger said that pilots told them that their cockpit displays went dark and that they briefly launched control. this is what 787 cockpit looks like. i can see the switching question on the backside of the seats near the head rest. it moves each seat four and after on an l-shaped track. and when

and what they must be going through i want to go right now to cnn's pete muntean, who was at the press conference this very evening. pete, i'm so glad you're here and with your reporting because we got a lot of information coming from the ntsb tonight, including the possibility that contaminated fuel may have played a role. what more can you tell us? >> it is a theory but not one that the ntsb has given all that much credence to yet they say that they will do a test of the fuel on board the mv dali, something they typically do during any investigation like this investigators war on board the mv dali today and they he say that they have been able to determine that there was some sort of power outage on board the ship, although they do not yet know the cause, the big stumbling block right now is the voyage data recorder. the ship's black box. it only records limited parameters, a few things like the engine rpm the position of the ship's rudder, and the heading of the ship's bow. and ntsb chair, jennifer homendy says, she would love to see more data from ships like this to help an investi

seeing blood on the ceiling of this airplane and they saw people flying through the air cnn's pete muntean is getting the latest details. pete, tell us what you're learning. well, severe turbulence, it's it's like this, keep making headlines, john and will likely see even more of these with climate change. seven hurt lives march on a lufthansa flight 11 heard on a delta flight and august 36 on a hawaiian airlines flight, december before last, but this one is the most significant in recent memory, first responders say they've treated 50 people in total on board it's flight 12 taken to the hospital. one patient in serious condition that's happened on lat am flight 800 between sydney, australia, and auckland, new zealand. that flight ultimately goes on the santiago, chile. this was a boeing 787, although unlikely to be connected to any of the issues, the systemic issues that boeing has had with the 7:30 pretty seven max-9, the flight was apparently at 41,000 feet. that's the cruising altitude. the time when the seatbelt sign can be off, passengers say that is when the plane hit turbulence, on

see you in an aviation correspondent, pete muntean joins us now, so pete walk us through this training and what the ceo is trying to share with united customer united, that a bad couple of weeks headlines and now it ceo is sending this message to all of the airline's customers, insisting that the airline is safe. but also laying out new changes that the airline is making. there's been at least six in-flight incidents involving united airplanes. this month than in this new message, united ceo scott kirby says, while all of these incidents are unrelated, i want you to know that these incidents have our attention and have sharpened our focus. the latest incident was on friday, a united boeing triple 737800 landed in medford, oregon with a belly panel missing. this was first discovered by somebody on the ground when the plane pulled up to the gate, united says this did not affect the flying characteristics of the plane. so this wasn't known by the pilots and they did not declare an emergency. united says all of the incidents this month are now under review. let's look at the timeline. marc

our aviation correspondent, pete muntean is here with us right now. pete, first of all, what can you tell us about the scheduled maintenance of this boeing seven 30-7 >> the bottom line here is that this plane should never have left a boeing factory. would that look? critical for door plug bolts that hold that door plug onto the airplane. but now investigators have this new question to ask would this scheduled maintenance check the night of the blowout have caught that omission by boeing, would previous pressurization system warnings and the cockpit have led to a check on the door-plug, the ntsb he has said those warnings were unrelated to the block, but it's something no doubt the ntsb will dig into. they have the maintenance records from this airplane. let's look at the timeline here and the preliminary report from the national transportation safety board. this plane was delivered to alaska airlines october 31, halloween day 2023, on december 7th, there was the first pressurization good morning in the cockpit, and then two days before the door plug b

cnn aviation correspondent pete muntean joins me now to talk about this. pete, we're not supposed to have tyre's falling off of planes tires pop, jim, they catch fire occasionally rarely ever. do they fall from the sky and onto the ground from a commercial airliner. this was the scene yesterday, its efforts, its go international airport 11, a.m. pacific time. that's triple-7 going to osaka and japan and here on the bottom the plane, this is the left main went landing gear. you can see the tire there has separated from this set of six wheels in pretty alarming. and this was caught initially by plane spotters who were doing a live stream on this on youtube. you could see the tire fall to the ground. apparently it bounced a little bit and then into the employee lot there at sfo. that is the tire roped off by the police. there in the employee lot, cause a fair amount of damage to cars on the ground. each one of these tigers weighs about 265 pounds, but doesn't include the weight of the wheel hub. you could see it looks like it hit the fence there then it hit th

but on that breaking news, cnn's pete muntean joins us, was at that ntsb news conference that just wrapped a moment ago, pete tel moos, the highlights as this investigation is going on we're getting so many briefings a day. what did they just tell us? >> a moment ago >> national transportation safety board chair jennifer homendy described a sad tale, a boat completely out of control helpless with no hope, careening toward the key bridge. what is really interesting is that investigators now have the voyage data recorder and they were able to give us a tiktok, a blow by blow of what was going on on the ship at left port at about 01:24 sorry, left left port earlier than 124 about 01:06 in the morning, but at 01:24, 59 numerous alarms lit up on the bridge of the ship that is when the crew on the bridge of the ship called for the tugboats that pulled it out of the secret port there in the port of baltimore to come back, they reported multiple power failures and they describe about four minutes and 30 seconds of terror. this boat essentially out of of control, veering off of the channel in the c

cnn's pete muntean is in baltimore for us. so pizza only been a few days since the bridge collapsed. there are a lot of moving parts in the investigation right now, have we learned anything new about exactly how this happened? >> well the ntsb has boarded the dali again today for the third time in three days, and they have recovered the ship's black box known on a ship like this as a voyage data recorder. they have used that data to create a timeline of these desperate final moments. on board the mv dali that was careening out of control and towards baltimore's key bridge, the ntsb says, after the ship set sail a little bit after midnight on tuesday morning things were fine for about 46 minutes. then at 01:25 a.m. that is when the ship's bridge lit up with alarms at 01:26 a.m. there was a command for rudder to turn the ship and then a plea for tugboats to come back and help the ship 01:27 a.m. that's when the crew picked up the rate do and said the dali has lost all power. we are headed for the key bridge and then at 01:29 a.m

former deputy director of the fbi and seniors, cnn, senior law enforcement analyst, and cnn's pete muntean, who is live near the scene, a peat. when you see the images of the collapse and you just see how quickly this entire bridge falls into the river. what is your takeaway? >> we are launched an out-of-control vessel, and this calamity happen really in slow motion all of this really was very condensed though, in about a few minutes time. and really we're hearing about a crew that was sort of outclassed by the problem here, transportation secretary of maryland, paul whelan filled tells me that a local pilot from the baltimore harbor or the port of baltimore was on board the boat and in command of this ship, 950 feet long as it careened at eight knots toward one of the center pilings of this truss bridge. i want you to look behind me. you can can still see it in the punjab sco river back there with the containers on it. this chip is about nine gross tons. so a lot of inertia and a lot of mass was headed for this piling when it hit just before that at 01:24. that's when it was cleared on th

i want to bring in cnn aviation correspondent pete muntean. everyone now has seen a lot of scary headlines about planes. are these things just now happening or are we just now hearing about them? >> there's a little bit of connective tissue here, jake, and that all really kicked off with the 7:37 max nine door plug blow out back on january 5 after that, there has been incident after incident, there's the latam airlines 787 incident of earlier this week, there were smoking tires on a 777 coming out of sydney, just the other day there was the triple-7 that lost a tire and san francisco all of these things involve boeing airplanes, but that is really where the connection ends. the door plug blowout incident, really highlighted some quality control issues at boeing. it's the most dramatic, it's the most dangerous everything after that is mostly a one-off so there are definitely quality control problems at boeing and those are really being investigated now by the ntsb and the faa. and now boeing has a perception problem whether or not it is warrant

let's bring in cnn aviation correspondent pete muntean. pete, what are we hearing from the ntsb right now? but its investigation of that door plug blowout on an alaska airlines plane? >> well, the woman leading this investigation is now putting boeing on blast. again, ntsb chair jennifer homendy says that boeing's lack of a paper trail is hampering this investigation. remember, the ntsb's preliminary report on the january that incident said this boeing did not re-install for critical door plug bolts before this 737 max nine was delivered to alaska airlines, the bolts were removed at the boeing factory in renton, washington for corrective work on another part of the blaine, the ntsb says boeing has not been able to produce the paperwork that details that work. here is what homedy says in her new update of the senators on the committee overseeing aviation, the absence of those records will complicate the ntsb's investigation moving forward, she also underscored that boeing hasn't been unable to locate the security footage of that work. boeing

we have seen an aviation correspondent, pete muntean here with more pete. what does boeing have to say for itself because it seems like these should have turned over these documents. the real question here here is why these documents did not get turned over to the ntsb in the first place. and if these documents even exist, what is worse is the question that the ntsb chair is asking and all this goes back to the door plug blowout on alaska flight 12, 82, back on january 5, the ntsb said in its preliminary a report that boeing did repairs to the fuselage back in september at the factory and boeing's factory in renton, washington, repair work was done near the door plug on some rivets. the door plug had to be removed for that work and the ntsb says they re-installed the door-plug at boeing, but not the for safety critical bowl that hold the door plug in place on the side of the airplane, alaska airlines took delivery that playing in october did 154 flights after that, the ntsb wants to know who did that work and who was responsible for putting those bolts back
