we have cnn aviation correspondent pete muntean with us here.ete, first off, tell us what's behind this aborted takeoff. >> well, and this wasn't just the tarmac. this was on the runway. >> this was taking place as this airplane was taking off. >> and it all took place during this rare snow that was happening in atlanta. more than half of all departures are canceled today. and this jammed up things even more by tying up one of the main runways. the good news is, all 200 people on this flight are safe. according to delta air lines, this flight was on its way to minneapolis-saint paul about 7 a.m. eastern time, and flight tracking data shows the pilots began accelerating for takeoff and atlanta's runway nine left. >> they got to about 85 knots, 90mph. >> and that's when delta says the crew noticed an engine issue, so they aborted the takeoff. that means stopping in the remaining runway using the wheel brakes. the air brakes, which are known as spoilers and reverse thrust from the engines, something that pilots drill for all the time. >> what is ra

cnn's pete muntean joins us now. pete, what exactly happened here? well, to put it simply, this was pretty brazen and could have been a whole heck of a lot worse. >> the restricted airspace has been in place over the l.a. fire since tuesday. a safe space for aerial firefighting by effectively creating a no fly zone for other aircraft. and now the faa wants to know how a drone ended up in there. it was hit by one of the air tankers helping out from canada, a canadair cl 415, better known as the super scooper that has been vital to this air attack. they fly out to the pacific ocean, load up on about 1500 gallons of water, then swoop back in and drop that water on their target fire. this is the exact plane in question known as quebec one. and these are the photos from the los angeles fire department. you can see the hole in the leading edge of the wing there. that is where the drone apparently impacted this plane. the latest update from the los angeles fire department says the plane remains out of service right now. and i want you to listen now to polic

cnn aviation correspondent pete muntean joins me now. pete. what happened? >> well, these passengers have a pretty harrowing story to tell. >> 201 passengers on board this boeing 757 operated by delta airlines flight 2668, was on its way from snowy atlanta. >> a pretty rare snowstorm there. on its way to minneapolis-saint paul. when the data from open source data compiler ads-b exchange shows that this flight started to begin to accelerate for takeoff on atlanta's runway nine left there, the data says the flight got to about 85 knots, 90mph. when the crew decided to apparently abort the takeoff. this flight, coming to a stop about 5000ft down this runway, and then the crew elected to have the passengers aboard through the emergency slides on the runway there in busy atlanta, one of the busiest airports in the world. the video is pretty incredible of the passengers going down the emergency slides there on the runway. this flight did not make it to the ramp. there's some pretty interesting questions here. of course, passengers are telling us that they saw one

cnn aviation correspondent pete muntean is here also. it's just so much water and you can't haul that in. if you're there, you're there to dig line. if you're a wildland firefighter, to be clear here. so this is key. do we know about the winds and what they're doing to hinder this? >> the winds are subsiding enough for them to get airplanes and helicopters in the air, which is so critical to this. just check the flight trackers. aerial firefighting aircraft in the air right now. mostly helicopters working in an area near topanga that's just northwest of pacific palisades. the conditions have been really extreme, with howling winds hampering the aerial firefighting work. but the good news is winds are subsiding enough because the air tankers are critical to attacking out of control wildfires. wildfires like this. the red retardant they drop is a slurry mostly made of phosphorus. and crews drop it around the edge of a fire to beat it back, giving firefighters on the ground a chance of putting it out. at the center of all this is the califo

. >> i'm pete muntean at reagan national airport. >> this is cnn. >> today. los angeles mayor karen bass urged residents living in vulnerable areas to follow all the evacuation orders, while the strong santa ana winds that fuel these fires, destroying homes and businesses are expected to flare up again. meteorologist chad myers is in the cnn weather center looking at these conditions. and chad, these winds, the santa ana's are what's driving so much of this. walk us through what you're watching, what you're seeing, really. >> it's the setup that we've had all week, jessica. high pressure, let's call it north of las vegas, because you know where that is. and then a low pressure near baja california. and because those two were so strong, but oppositely opposed, the wind came through the canyons. and that's how we got here. this is how any santa ana happens. but the fact that this was an 85 to 100 mile per hour santa ana wind event means that the high was too high and the low was too low, and that pressure just ripped right through those canyons and right over t

. >> i'm pete muntean at reagan national airport. >> this is cnn new this morning. >> the surgeon general is now calling for cancer warning labels on alcohol. his new advisory notes that it's one of the leading preventable causes of the disease. cnn's meg tirrell joins us now. so, meg, explain more about what this data, what it tells, tell us, prompting this warning. >> yeah, pamela, i mean, the scientific evidence has really been moving in this direction for some time that alcohol consumption really at any level, less is better. >> and that kind of goes in the face of what we've been told for decades. maybe that drinking red wine, for example, can be good for our health. increasingly, we're hearing the opposite. and so in this new advisory today, the surgeon general lays out the evidence essentially looking at hundreds of studies linking cancer and alcohol consumption and also looking at the biological mechanisms that underlay this. he points out that it is the alcohol consumption is the third leading cause of preventable cancer in the u.s., after tobacco and obesity. and as part of this
