pete suratos, today in the bay. >>> thank you, pete.his morning crews in southern california sifting through rubble after a deadly fiery plane crash yesterday. five people were on board a cessna 310 heading home after a cheer competition at disneyland when the plane fell from the sky. >> bob, what are the neighbors saying about what happened here? >> reporter: good morning to you, kris ask sam. a neighbor tells nbc news that the owner home was an experienced pilot and he and his wife were both avid travelers. i want you to look up from what you're doing right now. we have foo video that is quite startling. this was shot by a surveillance camera. it shows the is cessna in the momenting leading up to the crash. this is just outside los angeles. a total of five people. it happened at 4:30 yesterday. it crashed into two homes setting both on fire. the cessna smashed into pieces. three of the five people on board died. two men, both in their late 30s, early 40s, survived. both treated for their injuries. one woman was ejected from the plane

pete suratos for today in the bay. >>> thank you so much, pete. now we want to take you live to the santa cruz mountains right now. mudslides and washed out roads and major problem for people in that area. crews are race to go clean up before the next round of storms. an update when highway 17 should reopen. caltrans crews are work to go break up and clear out this mudslide from tuesday. right now only one lane is open in every direction. it isn't expected to fully reopen now until monday. thousands of commuters are affected. but it isn't the only area having problems. take a look. tuesday night a van almost vanished into a sinkhole on skyland road. the driver is okay, but the road is still closed. no estimate for when it will be back open. >> just a bit too close for comfort there. 6:05. it is smooth sailing for commuters who are traveling westbound 580 through livermore. all lanes fully cleared just before 11:00. now, it wasn't so smooth when a huge pothole appeared in the right-hand lane. workers trying to clear it up and patch it up. a dozen c

nbc 7's pete suratos joining us. it looks like the fire is still active behind you. >> reporter: good morning to you, sam. san francisco fire saying this is still an active fire even though a majority of it has been put out. i want to show you guys the fire fighters still on the scene on the 1100 block of pacific. they don't know where the fire originated from. when they showed up, there was heavy fire in the basement. let's show you some aerials from nbc bay area chopper. it appears this is a commercial business building on the bottom with residential units on the top. according to the city officially spoke to, crews arrived shortly after 8:00 a.m. and this was deemed a 2 alarm fire. one perp was rescued and that person we're being told has minor injuries. the san francisco fire tweeted out they have a good handle on the fire but it is still active. area near pacific and stockton is still blocked offer. this say seven businesses have been affected from this 2 alarm fire. there look to be 20 residential units inside

pete suratos continuing our coverage from guerneville. >> the storm is set to be moving out at least later tonight. a russian river is still a major concern for people living nearby, pete. >> reporter: yeah. good morning to you, laura and sam. it is always a concern for folks here in guerneville. and the russian river is expected to crest at 35.7 feet at 1:00 p.m. so you have evacuation notices going to folks along the russian river. they have opened up the emergency operation center in sonoma county. this is the building along drake road. yesterday this was completely devoid of water. no water at all. as you can see, the river is expected to crest later on today. you are seeing the water start to creep up just a couple of feet below the windowsill. sonoma county evacuated its emergency evacuation center. we should see flooding in those low-lying areas. also in monte rio. information that was passed along to my by officials they want to get out to residents. first, look out for road closures today. that is all depending on the weather conditions. pg&e in place. they will be fully staf

live in novato, pete suratos, today in the bay. >>> the time is 5:39.e're still watching the wet roads all around the area. mild temperatures as we have not yet seen cold front moving through. that's behind the wet weather. it will be rolling through within the next couple of hours before this system winds down with the heaviest rain. then we will see more spotty activity as we go through the day. some of the bright reds and the yellows being picked up in the east bay and the south bay. expect it to be very soggy and the potential of standing water on the roadways the rain winds down from the north bay as well as san francisco and the peninsula. also some breeze winds. expect those winds at 15 to 20 miles per hour. and it makes it a little bit harder for the morning drive. speaking of the morning drive, how does it look, mike, heading out? >> we're getting a lot of reports of roadwayed flooding. specifically around the oakland area. this is unusual to get this much information. friday sees a little bit more activity. folks trying to get in and get out o

nbc bay area's pete suratos joining us from san jose. te, you spoke to an immigration attorney how this would work. how is she interpreting today's news? >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, sam. yes, i just spoke to a local immigration attorney here in san jose, and she's urging folks to remain calm, especially since the white house went ahead and denied what's in that ap report. you briefly mentioned in the ap report it is stating or claiming the trump administration will use nearly 100,000 members of the national guard to round up undocumented immigrants. now, she understands hysteria around this topic when you take into account the trump's administrations hard line stance on immigration. it would be a state-by-state basis to carry this out. if it's up to california she does not see them doing this. >> you have to look state by state. there are 11 states that they would have to get permission to use those troops. it's a question whether the states would be willing to do that. >> reporter: now, white house press secretary sean spicer

live in san jose, pete suratos nbc bay area news. >> thank you, pete. let's look at the culprit, the cause of all this. we're going to go to anderson reservoir. take a look at that. all that water is flowing into coyote creek. this is new video of a very full anderson reservoir in morgan hill. it's actually at capacity. it hit capacity over the weekend. you can see all that water gushing out of the reservoir. that's the overflow, uncontrolled water going into coyote creek which runs through the morgan hill area, then up through south santa clara county into san jose before finally dumping into the bay near milpitas. yesterday obviously too much water going into that creek and that's why we're seeing this flooding. you know, let's bring in kari hall now. it's dry, it's sunny, but the water is still rising in some areas. >> janelle, even with all of that water rushing out of the anderson reservoir over the dam, i haven't seen water levels dropping this much. it's holding steady. that shows you how much water we have to deal with here and how much it conti

. >> pete suratos is joining us from outside the court on where the case stands today. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. first things first. early sunday morning the ninth circuit court of appeals denying the emergency stay request to keep that travel ban in place from the department of justice but they did not deny the appeal so today they're asking for legal briefings from both sides before they make that final decision but of course that controversial travel ban sparking discussion nationwide and especially here in the bay area. you had president trump not too happy about that district judge in seattle suspending the travel ban on friday night even sending off a series of tweets calling this federal judge a "so-called judge." this court in san francisco is considered one of the most liberal courts in the u.s. we talked to a legal expert on what's expected today. >> they would have to show that there's good reason to think that this order is constitutional. and they would also have to show that the states are not going to suffer irreparable harm while awaiting

nbc bay area pete suratos continues our coverage. you're near highway 37. it looks like you're standing near a sump pump this morning >> reporter: good morning to you, kris. we're here at highway 37 and high watt 1201. a couple weeks ago, five days ago you had this road completely flooded out. it is only a slight drizzle. i want to keep ton here, guys. this is what cal trans set up. a retention basin so if it does flood it runs through here. the water will get pumped out and dumped over here in the wetlands. we'll show you guys some of the that video from about five days ago when you saw this highway 37 was pretty much flooded out and had to close down twice the pafts couple weekends due to the flooding. when i spoke to cal trans by phone they said the flooding was more than likely caused by recent storms and king tides. he roo tension basin has been in the north bay for sometime but was moved to this specific location because it was in a better position to handle the water. but right now, guys, it's all clear. it's only a drizzle so you're not seeing the h

nbc bay area's pete suratos joining us live from oroville today. peetd, you had a chance to talk with some people who just got back to town. are they feeling any more secure with all these measures to try to sure things up? >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, sam. yes, we talked to locals here in oroville. they're trying to get back into the swing of things. returning to a relatively empty downtown oroville, but they clearly understand things can change and it could be on the move yet again. jennifer travis is happy to once again take orders from her customers. she personally did not have to evacuate, but she was force today shut down her restaurants on sunday when the butte county sheriff's department evacuated nearly 200,000 people due to the erosion of the emergency spillway at the oroville dam. >> all the people had to go to shelters and customers and employees not knowing, you know, not knowing when the evacuation was going to be lifted and when we could get our lives back. >> right away i got with my family ask we headed up to the hill an

nbc bay area pete suratos joins us live from orville where we want know if the rain is interfering with the progress on the spillway, pete. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, kris. really with the exception of this morning on our morning show, that is the only time we saw rain near the oroville dam. it's been pretty dry t. was windy but not so much right now. i want to show you guys this is the main spillway of the oroville dam that you're seeing, quite the outflow of water it has been reduced. we got that update. the intention of that is to reduce the lake levels near the emergency spillway and is definitely doing its job. i want to show you guys some new video we have of crews that have been on-site. you hear the helicopters overhead. they have been working hard to deal with the erosion at the emergency spillway. you're seeing trucks bringing in those big boulders that are going to be placed by helicopter in the air a utah jazz that are eroding and of course that erosion at the emergency spillway prompted the evacuation of nearly 200,000 people near the oroville dam. and so far,

pete suratos is monitoring the levels as back-to-back storms move in. the very latest on the spillway concerns coming up at 6:35. >>> in the meantime, happening right now, workers heading back to the high rise in san francisco after very tense hours yesterday after a platform failed. >> today in the bay kris sanchez live explaining what crews will attempt to do today. good morning, kris. >>> let's start by saying the danger here is secure. it is closed between first and second. all the work will be happening high a top the high rise that is under construction. it threatened to come down, bringing with it a concrete wall. one of the supports under 19,000 pound concrete failed, destabilizing. you can see that on nbcbayarea.com. workers at that point called 911. it took crews three hours to stabilize and secure the pump. it was seven hours before folks could get back in. >> i'm late for work. and i just videotaped this. nobody said nothing. >> it will remain closed between first and second until all of this is complete. it is happening all the way up there

pete suratos for today in the bay. >> all right. thank you very much, pete. here's a live look in the meantime at the santa cruz mountains. mudslides and washed out roads plaguing parts of the area. we are getting an update on how much longer it is going to take to fix 17. they're having trouble there. caltrans is working on highway 17 trying to clear out the mudslide that happened on tuesday. right now one lane is open in each direction. thousands of commuters affected but it isn't the only area that is having problems. on wednesday night, the van almost vanished completely in a sinkhole. drivers escaped without injury. no estimate when it will be back open. >> that is just a crazy sight there. 5:04. smooth sailing for commuters traveling we have bound 580 through livermore. it wasn't so smooth when a huge pothole appeared in the right-hand lane. rainy weather has been a culprit for potholes. as of 10:45 last night, they cleared the pothole there and you are clear to move on 580 west bound. great resource as our nbc bay area app. get real-time radar and see

pete suratos, nbc bay area news. >> thank you very much, pete. >>> let's lay out what's happening so you get a sense graphically. this is lake oroville. this is the dam that is structurally sound. this is the main spillway where the water is coming right now. this is the emergency spillway where there is no water right now. but it wasn't dry last night. this is what it looked like last night when the lake levels breached 900 feet. what you can see is water gushing down. this is where it's supposed to be going on the emergency spillway. but the water migrated to other channels in the area causing immediate erosion. it was not supposed to be going that part of the hillside. that's what pete was addressing with the possible boulders going in. this is the profile from higher up. it's great to see the aerial perspective sometimes. this is the main spillway here and this is the feather river. that's what's supposed to be happening, controlled going in there, staying within the channel. there is another element at the same time as you look at it from reverse what's happening. you see the wa
