reporting live, pete suratos, nbc bay area news. >> all right, pete, thanks. >>> all right. well, it's time to get a look at that forecast for us, kari. and we saw even there in oakland where the air quality, the sky is just very hazy. >> yeah, it has been so smokey. and it's getting even worse right now as we take a live look outside in walnut creek, visibility is only at about two miles here. so you can't even see the hills in the distance. and we are seeing that across many parts of the bay area, especially the east bay. and it really doesn't even matter which direction the wind is coming from. because there are fires in that direction. and right now we have a northerly wind, so it's bringing in smoke from the glass fire. but then you also have the zogg fire that's really burning pretty hot right now. then from the south, we are also seeing some of those fires across parts of southern california from the creek fire to the sqf fire that we continue to monit we're heading into the 90s for today. as we head toward 2:00, livermore will be at 95 degrees. we're at 91 in santa r

"today in the bay's" pete suratos joins us live this morning. fica with a holiday message from health leaders we all need to listen to, pete. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, laura. the message in pacifica and other parts of the bay area is not to come to the beaches. they're going to close them down for labor day weekend and the beach parking lots. that will begin tomorrow. that will last throughout all of labor day weekend. here are some of the other areas making that similar decision. we know santa cruz county will also close its boechs for labor day weekend. that will start tomorrow and will last through monday. i do want to point out saturday and sunday the beaches will be open between 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. monterey county is closing beaches that will start tonight and will last through monday. point reyes and marin county will be closed due to the woodward fire and, of course, pacifica beaches and parking lots will be closed starting tomorrow. that will last through tuesday. as you can see a number of beaches will still remain open

nbc bay area's pete suratos joins us live from pacifico where it looks so refreshing. we're going to try to resist that temptation. >> reporter: yeah. good morning to you, kris. we're seeing a lot of beachgoers here in pacifica take advantage of it, but those beaches will be closed starting tomorrow. they already have signs up telling folks that the beaches and parking lots will be closed effective sunrise saturday until sunrise tuesday. it says, wear a mask, avoid crowds. and the point of this is to stop the spread. but these aren't the only beaches in the bay area that are putting these measures in place to hopefully stop the spread of the coronavirus with those large gatherings. we sow in santa cruz county they are closing down beaches starting tomorrow. and that'll last through monday. but they will open from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on saturday and sunday. we're seeing monterey county also close its beaches. they will start tonight and end on monday. and point reyes in marin county will be closed, but that is due to the woodward fire. health officials are cautioning

today pete suratos is live with an update on, i guess you could call it hair gate. >> good morning to you, laura. that controversial media making its way across social media and we know that the stylist here at the salon did put out a statement who is agreeing with the house speaker that he claims this was a set up but, of course, the owner is agreeing with this claim and she said as much in an interview with fox news. show our viewers this video if you haven't seen it yet at east salon in san francisco. now the backlash, of course, is because indoor appointments are not allowed due to the coronavirus and also her mask appears to be under her neck. now the stylist did say in a statement through an attorney, as i mentioned, he claims this was a set up and claiming that the owner erica kious has been illegally styling clients from us and is also unhappy with speaker pelosi over the restrictions when it comes to businesses and covid. here is kious talking during a response with tucker carlson on fox news as well as speaker pelosi weighing in at an event she was attending yesterday. >> sh

reporting live, pete suratos, nbc bay area news. >> very gray behind you. thank you, pete. >>> we're following breaking news near chico and the national forest. a major flare up sending up a tower of smoke and flames. you can see it there. this is all part of the north complex fire. the u.s. forest service said a fire jumped a containment line and burned at least 20,000 additional acres. tonight it's growing at the estimated rate of about 1,000 acres every 30 minutes. after all we've seen in the past through weeks, the fire near yosemite is an unprecedented disaster. that's according to cal fire. this is the sierra national forest northeast of fresno. more than 140 people trapped by the creek fire were rescued by chinook helicopters early this morning. now, over the holiday weekend, national guard helicopters rescued 200 other campers out of this area. people are being evacuated from the places you see here, hidden lake, lake edison, china peak and shaver lake. these are all popular spot. among the people rescued, three backpackers from the south bay. nbc ba

reporting live, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >>> the bay area just saw the highest number of covid-19 deaths in one day. there were 30 reported yesterday. the most reported in a single day since the start of the pandemic. there are 87,000 cases in the bay area and more than 1,000 deaths. statewide, nearly 800,000 cases and more than 13,000 deaths. >>> all right, so, take a look at the state's new color coded reopening tiers. this is new. where each bay area county currently stands by color. you can see san francisco, napa, are the only two below that purple widespread risk level. that could soon change, though.
