let's go to nbc justice correspondent pete williams. pete, bring us up to speed on what stood out to you and what to expect with the court appearance from paul manafort. >> reporter: stepping back here to summarize it, i think you can get lost in the weeds of what the actual counts are, but the theory of the indictment is that manafort engaged to earn millions of dollars in fees from politicians in ukraine and lobbied for the government in the u.s. lobbied members of congress, lobbied the administration for ten years, but it says they failed to register as foreign agents if they were representing a foreign government. and failed to report millions of dollars to the irs. instead, they funneled the money to offshore accounts. they put $7 million through and he spent $3 million. there's nothing in the charges directionally act the russians or last year's election. and another interesting thing i think is that robert mueller was appointed special counsel in may, but the indictment says that the justice department actually started investigati

pete williams stand by. jay gray is on the ground and spoke to victims, people who were there who were either traumatized or injured and saw it all. jay? >> mika, we've been pushed back by police a couple of blocks off the strip. pete was just talking about las vegas police now saying online that they are confident that they've located the female person of interest here. they say they've also located vehicles that are a part of the investigation. so just some breaking news on that. take a look at the scene here behind me. you can see the strip still locked down, and there are still people pouring through the city who are at this concert. i did talk to a young man who just came through. no shirt. he said he took that shirt off to attend to one of the wounded on the ground. another couple that came through earlier, blood all over their clothes saying they too were trying to help those who had been shot. as you can imagine, the people that moved through this area still very stunned. many of them can't get back

joining us pete williams. thanks for being with us tonight. appreciate your time. >> you bet. >> we know a little bit about the biography of this shooter and movements in terms of property purchases and employment history and where he lived. do we have any inkling what might have driven him? >> we don't because authorities don't. we know a fair amount about his life, but nothing to indicate why he came to the hotel intending to kill a huge number of people. we don't know whether that in fact was his plan to attack that concert and that's why he asked for the rooms where he did. we just don't know. there is a lot of supposition here but very few answers. nothing in his past would seem to lead up to this. as you point out, there is no social media postings or claims -- credible claims of credit. there is no e-mails, no notes left behind. no manifesto, no video made to claim credit for this by him himself. nobody has come forward to say they thought they heard him talking about something or saw him preparing for something or thought he was capabl

back to you. >> thank you. >> we'll go to pete williams, back to pete williams. we've said we do not have an identity of the shooter. we do according to the local sheriff have an identity of someone perhaps described as a companion or roommate. what more can you tell us? >> reporter: right. our assumption based on the records we've looked at is this is the roommate. her name is marilou danley, d-a might have -n-l-e-y. 4'11", 111 pounds, asian. i think it's important to point out that they've made it clear they have no idea whether she played any role in the shooting. because she is the roommate, they want to try to find her, talk to her, see what information she can shed on what happened here. they also are looking for two cars registered to the male suspect. we know it was a man who fired shots because the police have said so. a hedge fuyundai tucson and chr touring. they've given nevada plate numbers for both. they're eager to find marilou danley because they believe she can shed more light. they don't know what the man's motivation was to go to the 32nd floor

pete williams has been tracking down his sources, giving us new information all morning long on a story that happened about five hours ago. pete, what's the latest you can tell us? >> reporter: we're told now, matt, that when the authorities entered his hotel room they found several weapons. we don't know yet what kind of weapons those were, and we know there's an urgent trace going on to try to figure out what the weapons were. one question here is we know that he's dead and the assumption here among the federal authorities i've been talking to is that he was shot by the police that breached the room, but we're working to confirm that whether he shot himself or whether he was shot by the authorities. we think he was shot by the police when they basically blew the door open into his hotel room. once they figured out where the shots were coming from. the suspect, stephen paddock, 64 years old, born april 9, 1953. lived in mesquite, nevada, where a search is going on now of his house. this woman, marilou danley, was his roommate there and some eyewitnesses have said they saw the two of th

i would add to what pete williams said. i'd like to point out that usually breathlessness in the reporting of legal matters is inversely proportional to the knowledge of them. pete is always restrained so i always listen very closely. mr. papadopoulos was not charged with any crime for seeking the dirt on hillary clinton. i think this is probably the most overlooked aspect of the story today. is that if it was illegal to go after the bait that the russians put out there, then he wasn't charged with that. he's very much up to his neck in this. and there may be others. certainly manafort and gates. but thus far, papadopoulos was not charged for wanting those e-mails. and that tells me a lot about what the special counsel thinks about what matters in this investigation. >> i was a little surprised there, hugh, to hear you compare the investigation so far to watergate. frank, you know how the fbi operates and conducts investigations like this. what's been going through your mind over these last 24 hours? what sticks out to you?

our justice correspondent pete williams joins us now with late details. pete? >> reporter: lester, good evening. investigators say this new information comes from what authorities hope will be one of the most productive searches now underway, of his electronic trail from the half dozen phones and computers he left behind. officials say stephen paddock did internet research earlier this year on la la palooza, the summer music festival in chicago's grant park. they say he even reserved rooms in a hotel that overlooks the park for a few days before the event though he never showed up. he also researched events at boston's fenway park and nearby hotels, officials say. searches of electronic devices found in his home and his internet browsing history, a sign, they say, paddock was thinking of attacking large crowds months before the las vegas shooting rampage. but so far investigators are stumped over how stephen paddock went from being a varsity tennis player and sociable high school student in california to the anti-social former accountant who became a mass murde

let's go to pete williams, our justice correspondent, with more information. pete?well, a couple of important points to note. first of all, the sheriff did resolve this whole issue, at least for the moment, of the woman, marilou danley. earlier this morning, as a matter of fact, i believe in the first news conference that the sheriff had after the shooting, he asked for the public help in finding her. we know she was living with stephen paddock in mesquite, neva nevada. they put this picture out. but now, saying she was not in the country. they saw them together in the hotel before the shooting. clearly, that's not the case. at least it wasn't the case in the few days leading up to the shooting. he also said he may -- paddock may have used her i.d. in checking in to the hotel. so, that's something that we're going to have to nail down, too. in any event, at the time of the shooting, she was outside the country. and they believe she was not involved in the shooting. clearly, they want to talk to her to see what she knew about stephen paddock and what was going on in

i turn now to pete williams. a journalist who has been through many of these crises he and tracked the federal law enforcement response. what can you tell us tonight? >> well, a couple things first have to be said about the investigative work going on right now. number one, authorities believe they know who this is. they have a drivers license that was on the man who was shot when he was taken into the hospital. they believe that the driver's license that they have is, matches the person that you see here in this video that is believed to be the person who drove car, the truck down the bike path and fired the shots from his bb gun. they say he is he a 29-year-old man. we believe he has been living, or lived at one point in tampa, florida. we believe that he entered the u.s. in 2010 as an uzbek national and is here as a lawful, permanent resident. has a green card. we frankly have heard several different versions of his name with different spellings. so until we're absolutely 100% certain which is the right spelli

here's nbc news justice correspondent pete williams. >> reporter: for first responders in grand forks, north dakota, it was an all-too-common call -- drug overdose. they found 18-year-old bailey henke dead of an overdose of fentanyl, a synthetic drug 50 times more powerful than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. police discovered that henke got it from a man in grand forks who bought his from a supplier in oregon that came from canada and was made and shipped from china by a 38-year-old man named john jiang. prosecutors revealed today that he and another chinese man have been charged with making tons of fentanyl at labs and plants they controlled in china, then selling it to distributors on the internet who paid in bit coins. of the 64,000 drug overdose deaths in 2016, 20,000 are blamed on fentanyl. american investigators say nearly all of it in the u.s. comes from china. either the finished product or the chemicals used to make it. so far, neither chinese man is in custody. the u.s. says china needs to do more. >> these cases reflect a new and disturbing trend of part of th

i want to go to pete williams now who's in washington, d.c. for us and pete is just joining us. what are you hearing from your vantage point having just heard the press conference that we all listened in to from the sheriff there? >> reporter: well, the information that i've gotten from the federal authorities i've talked to and obviously they're in support of the las vegas police is that they don't know the motive yet either and that's going to take some time. they know the name of the suspect. they're not releasing it at this point. we've heard some names but we haven't confirmed them. but the investigative effort now is to search this man's house. we know that the police say that the shots were fired by a male suspect, so he's a local resident so police are getting the search warrants they need to search his house. they know what cars are registered to him and they're asking people to help find those cars. they have the nevada plates for those cars and the make and model of the car. they didn't give the year, but recent model presumably, so they know the cars because they kno

that means a lot to them. >> i want to go back to nbc justice correspondent, pete williams, who has beenking his sources all through the morning. i am told you have new information, pete? >> couple of things, savannah. there were a couple of off-duty police officers, who were attending the concert, like anybody else, from a number of different law enforcement associations. a number of them were involved in the shooting. two of their officers were on duty during the concert. one had minor injuries. the other is in stable condition after surgery, they say. there were police officers who were wounded, as well, as concertgoers. we don't believe there were any police officers, at least we haven't ind -- no indication that any were wounded or injured when they blew the door off stephen paddock's hotel room this morning and shot and killed him. and inside the room, they say they found a cache of weapons. multiple weapons. one question that's arisen this morning is, how was it that he was able to achieve such lethal results, given how far away he was, from the concert location? we don't know pre

pete williams is in washington, d.c., and just joining us. what are you hearing from your vantage point having just listened in to the press conference from the sheriff there? >> reporter: the information that i've gotten from the federal authorities i've talked to -- and obviously they're at this point in support of the las vegas police, is that they don't know the motive yet either. that will take time. they know the name of the suspect but aren't releasing it. we know names but haven't confirmed them. the effort is to search the man's house. police saying the shots were fired by a local suspect. police getting search warrants to search his house. they know what cars are registered to him, and they're asking people to help find those cars they have nevada plates and gave the make and model, didn't give the year, recent model presumably. they know the cars because they know the suspect and know the cars that are registered to the suspe suspect. they have asked assistance in looking for the woman who was his roommate or companion, as police c

our justice correspondent pete williams has the new details. >> reporter: 9:59 p.m. police now say a hotel security guard checks a blocked stairwell door leading to the 32nd floor. he gets to the hallway outside stephen paddock's room when he's wounded by gun shots. just seconds later paddock opens fire on the crowd below. the previous timeline put that hallway shooting six minutes earlier. that was based on a hotel security log. >> i provided you the information as i knew it, and everybody in here knew it was going to change. >> reporter: investigators believe that paddock broke out one of the hotel windows to shoot at airport fut storage tanks 700 yards away, but there's little chance of an explosion from a gunshot. sheriff lombardo choked up today praising the heroism of his officers. >> excuse me for my emotion. >> reporter: he said arriving patrol cars drew paddock's attention away from the crowd. >> he adjusted his fire and directed it toward the police vehicles. so the response of those individuals, i believe, saved lives. >> reporter: while an autopsy reveale

our justice correspondent pete williams has details. >> reporter: paul manafort, former trump campaign chairman, is now a criminal defendant, accused of hiding millions in fees to avoid paying taxes and failing to register as a foreign lobbyist. robert mueller's prosecutors say manafort and his business partner and right-hand man in the campaign, rick gates, earned more than $75 million from 2006 to 2015 lobbying for viktor yanukovych, the former president of ukraine, vladimir putin's man in that position, but put the money in banks on island nations outside the u.s. to hide it from the government. but the indictment says nothing about manafort's role in the trump campaign. his lawyer angrily calls the charges ridiculous. >> i think you all saw it today that president donald trump was correct, there is no evidence that mr. manafort or the trump campaign colluded with the russian government. >> reporter: manafort and gates pleaded not guilty during a brief court appearance today. the judge set their bail and ordered them to remain in home detention. prosecutors say manafort spent some o
