pete williams, what is going on here? in many ways the bigger surprise is that the court was hearing this at all. this was a new york city ordinance that said if you have a permit for a handgun you could only go to one of seven shooting ranges in the state. one said he had a vacation home, a summer home, and he wanted to take his handgun there. they sues and new york city won. the law was upheld by a local court and a court of appeals, and they appealed the case to the supreme court, and while they were deciding whether or not to take the case, they did and at that point the city repealed law, and then they said cities could not pass laws like it. the law doesn't exist any more, but the supreme court will hear this argument today. one big question is whether or not this case is moot, the gun owners say yes, there is, but the city still treats them, but the biggest point here is that for the first time in a decade, the supreme court will go back into the second amendment issue and that is a surprise because after ruling in
