pete williams and kasie hunt and peter alexander? new hampshire and kristen welker is traveling here in new york. pete, let me start with you with these. just these three paragraphs from director comey sent to the hill and the judiciary. there is issues to resolve when the director announced in july they have found no evidence, they were through with the bulk of it. as it it is a purely technical thing. it is really never been closed and will at some point be. but it has not been yet. to be purely technical about it that it is not being reopened. now to the larger, there is sort of two questions here. one is would these new e-mails change the bottom line conclusion about whether crimes were committed and if it is just that the number of e-mails changed that -- i cannot remember what the number was. instead of 120, it is 125 then that would not change anything. the second is whether anyone is withholding evidence. i am told by senior officials who are familiar with the thinking behind this letter, they don't see any evidence with that

we start with nbc national correspondent peter alexander in our washington bureau. pence getting some stylistic points perhaps this morning, coming off more polished. coming off as having a more calmer presence than tim kaine. how did he do when he was pressed, when asked about donald trump's statements? >> this is kind of the donald trump frankly that trump's own advisers and republicans who have been reluctant to come on board with the trump campaign were hoping to see from the principal, the guy at the top of the ticket. last night, pence repeatedly trying to go after tim kaine, in effect, prosecuting the case against hillary clinton. he was also forced to defend a lot about what donald trump and he have said over the course of this campaign. sometimes he deflected. other tyimes, he denied. >> donald trump laid out a series of priorities that doesn't end with border security, it begins with border security, and after we secure the border, not only build a wall, but beneath the ground and in the air, we do internal enforcement -- >> let's make sure we're putting t

peter alexander outside the waldorf-astoria. and it's friday, which means the moderator of "meet the press" and nbc political director chuck todd is here with me to break it all down. let's first talk about this al smith dinner last night. we're giving these two candidates a really hard time. this is a vicious election. and neither of them are comedians. did donald trump just misread the room? >> 100%. but this is -- you know, this is not the first time. you know, the self-depreciation issue with him has always been a problem with him. go back to the comedy central roast. he does not know how to laugh at himself. he's not comfortable doing it. a lot of people want to read into why that is. but obviously, he totally misread. if he had a joke writer, he didn't listen to them. if that is what the product was of hiring a joke writer, then he should fire that joke writer. look, i didn't know it was possible to lose the al smith dinner, but he lost it. >> was it the hate catholics line? that's a tough -- that's a tough joke for anyone

nbc's peter alexander is in manchester, new hampshire, where donald trump is speaking today. no surprise, this seems to be at the heart of every trump speech right now. >> yeah, i think you're exactly right. we're on the banks of the merrimack river a short distance away from where donald trump will be with his first stop of the day. this is a point he has been making, punctuating his speeches throughout the course of the last several weeks. not always specifically about wikileaks but always this idea of corruption. even recently insiszing that hillary clinton shouldn't even be allowed to run because he accuses her of criminal wrongdoing. of course, the justice department didn't pursue the case against hillary clinton after its investigation led by the fbi director james comey. but here is one example just yesterday after that most recent wikileaks leak of donald trump going directly after his rival. >> the more e-mails, wikileaks releases, the more lines between the clinton foundation, the secretary of state's office, and the clintons' personal finances, they all get blurred
