peter alexander, first to you. the president making news with his pivot to supporting a filibuster change. what can he accomplish today? >> you are right. this is a frustration. it's a good message for democrats that the president says he does want that carveout, that limited exception, as it would relate to the filibuster specifically for abortion rights. he had only said something similar specifically on voting rights. democrats don't even have the votes right now to change the filibuster rules. the 50 democrats in the senate, only 48 support a possible change. sinema and manchin oppose it. they say when republicans take over, they can do whatever they like. the president will speak with those democratic lawmakers today. you noted nine of them who will be in attendance virtually. california's governor was initially expected to attend but no longer can due to a scheduling change that's taken place. he will be using this meeting as a way to really sort of demonstrate what these states are already doing to help try

joining us now, chief white house correspondent peter alexander, nyu law school professor, and dr. . thanks to all of you. peter, tell us about the white house and what they're hoping to achieve. what can the president really do by executive order given the sport's decision? >> it's certain the president is limited in the actions he can take by executive order. he can push congress to codify or guarantee the right to an abortion. but obviously the votes aren't there. today does mark key, but limited steps in terms of his actions, formalize instructions to his department of justice and health and human services department. a pushback on states to restrict travel from women in states where abortion is banned or soon to be banned to other states so they can still have that opportunity. he's also going to work with his administration to try to better expand access to reproductive care, to abortions, contraception, and the like, and going beyond that. on these topics, this announcement will direct the ftc to help protect sensitive medical information for patients who are looking to trave

with us now is nbc news chief white house correspondent, peter alexander. what does this executive order do? >> reporter: president biden has been under pressure from advocates to do more after the supreme court reversed roe v. wade so, today's action marks what i think you can call key but certainly limited steps. he's going to direct the federal government, the department of health and human services to work to protect access to abortion and to other reproductive services like contraception. this order he's supposed to sign also instructs his administration to expand access to family planning services and to abortion medication. those pills approved by the fda as safe and effective for more than 20 years. they account for a majority of the abortions in this country right now. and among the white house's efforts here, jose, to help ensure the safety of patients and providers including supporting efforts to deploy mobile clinics to borders to provide care for women in neighboring states where abortions are now or soon to be illegal, privacy, obviously a key

add to that you heard peter alexander of m. b. c. news speaking there in that press conference. he was also the same reporter that challenged not only the u. s. president, but also the crown prince in the palace about whether or not the u. s. president still believes, as he said in the campaign trail, the saudi kingdom should be treated as a pariah, or whether the crown prince believed that he should apologize to the family of jim l has shoji. in fact, he then challenged and was very clear when he was speaking of the president just now about whether or not the president really had a tough discussion with the crown prince. once the media was sent away and you heard the president and they're being very clear that he spoke to the crown prince, he was very straightforward. and he was very clear that he would not be silent on the issue of human rights. this was a precedent doing damage control. he was cleaning up what was clearly a bit of a public relations disaster. and you also heard that very same reporter speaking on behalf of the fiance of jim al has show g.

there was no audio, couldn't hear what either of them were saying and our own peter alexander saturday question asking if he would apologize to the family. let's take a listen to that moment and the crown prince's response. >> you apologized to the family? >> you can see the crown prince sort of seems to smirk at the hearing. that question they said that an aide tightly grabbed his arm after he asked that question and another u.s. reporter asked president biden if saudi arabia was still up, so that is in a reference to president biden knowing saudi arabia or he would make it a pariah state if you were to end office. as for the rest of the agenda obviously human rights is front and center. the president was asked going into the meeting if he was going to raise the murder directly with the crown prince and he declined to commit to doing that. other issues that are on the table are iran and obviously oil . if president biden will come back with any commitment on the gas prices back at home. >> thank you. just to give a little bit of context, we have been in the meetings before. it is not
