joining us now, peter alexander and eugene daniels. welcome to both. peter, first to you.'s blistering in taking on trump. the picture, the quotations. is it going to have an affect? he is certainly reacting. >> reporter: it's a good question. obviously, this has become a serious issue. the threats to democracy is according to our most recent voters, even above the cost of living and the economy. those are big drivers ahead of the midterms later this fall. i think what is striking in the document we saw yesterday, a document traditionally 20 pages, the doj saying it needed 36 pages to complete the outline of its case against the former president and those around him, indicating in some really stinging language that it was striking to them that in a matter of hours, they were able to find twice as many of these classified documents as the president and his team were able to gather up over the course of weeks. they say that calls into question the seriousness of the statements that the president's legal team made in the past. we see the text of that communication, the assura

nbc's peter alexander has more on today's bombshell developments. >> reporter: the 38-page affidavitwhat the fbi says it found in 15 boxes mr. trump returned to the national archives in january. mixed in with newspapers, magazines, and presidential correspondents were 184 classified documents, 67 of them marked confidential. 92 marked secret. and 25 documents marked top secret, where the government says, their unauthorized disclosure could result in exceptionally grave damage to the national security. also discovered, documents that contained information about clandestine human sources, and mr. trump's handwritten notes. the affidavit reveals more about the timeline, in may of last year, the national archives first requested the missing records from the former president. in january, mr. trump turned over those 15 boxes, maintaining that classified information. a month later, the archive sent a criminal referral to the justice department. president biden authorized the archives to reject any executive privilege claims by mr. trump over the documents, allowing the fbi to examine them.
