i am so delighted to be here today to celebrate killer hide, a fantastic new book by peter andreas. let me just say as a student of chinese affairs i hardly need to be told about the importance of the relationship between drugs and war. of course i

andrea? >> and peter, you and jeff mason both have watched this president very, very closely for a long time. jeff, in your reporting and how you're reading him, he is really pushing, and a number of his economic advisers are pushing against the medical experts. he wants to focus on the economy as much as on the health risks that are being talked about. >> yeah, he certainly does. and you know, yesterday was easter. only about a week and a half ago, the president had said he wanted to have the economy open by easter. and then, of course, he did listen to the health experts and agreed to extend mitigation efforts until the end of april. i think it's important as we're looking at and discussing whether and when he decides to open up the economy at the end of that period, that the models that his corona task force has been using or have been using includes mitigation efforts through the end of may. so, if he does decide to make a decision to open things up by may 1st or even in mid-may, that will have some kind of an impact on how many people are affected, and that's a question i asked last week

for peter notaro to look better after he was widely criticized after his challenge last week to the task force hearing and dr. fauci and the medical team over the untested hydroxychloroquine. >> andrea, you're right. and that was first reported by "the new york times," that memo dated january 29th. in it peter navarro warns of the potential economic damage and the potential for millions of american lives that could be lost because of the coronavirus crisis. and it really gets to the heart of the question swirling around the administration's response, why weren't there enough tests? why is that still an issue? why weren't there enough supplies? and why are hospitals and governors still saying they don't have enough supplies, despite the fact the administration has revved up its federal response. it is worth noting that according to "the times" -- and we haven't obtained that memo ourself yet, andrea, but according to "the new york times," that memo was essentially sent around to the national security council and reviewed by a number of top officials here. although it's not clear it was reviewed by the president, on the same day the president convened his first task force on the issue

andrea. >> and in terms of the president's calls to business leaders, peter, i want to bring you in for a moment on that. we checked with a number of business leaders, nbc news has found at least a half dozen who did not even know that they were members of this advisory council until the president announced it without any prior warning to them. they got notifications last night after his news conference about these calls throughout the day today, different sectors. but it almost seems as though he's looking for cover against the criticism down the road if it turns out he opened the country too soon. >> yes, it seems like a committee of what numbers can actually do. it's hard enough to get decisions made by a small number of people, how do you you do it by members across the country and could not get together in person? they have to do it on zoom or phone calls. doesn't seem the most effective way to do it. but i think you're right, the president wants to gather with some of the country's leading people. he's got extraordinary names on there, people with a lot of credibility beyond politics. jeff
