homestretch politics with peter baker of the "new york times" and a.b.stoddard of the "the hill." i'm candy crowley and this is "state of the union". >> democratic governor jerry brown sad out this year's convention was back home grappling with his massive state budget. a $16 billion deficit, he cutback what he didn't want. this fall the governor wants voters to approve a tax hike for the wealthy and increase in the sales tax. the outcome could have implications for spending mettles in washington and state capitals across the country. joining me is governor of california jerry brown. thank you, governor, for joining us. let's talk a little bit about where we are as a fall campaign begins. we just got another lackluster jobs report and a lot lower of job creation than folks thought it would be, and can president obama lose this election? >> well, obviously, anybody can lose or win an election. these things are not absolutely determined, and this is a close election, but i would say that the contrast of the difference is reasonably clear. romney almost reminds me of thomas dewey and

peter baker this morning's "new york times", he's a proud yet humbled president, a confident yet scarred president, a dreamer mugged by reality. does that resemble the man you know? >> no. it's not that complicated. you know, i think we see who barack is every single day. i mean, he comes from humble beginnings but he is deeply passionate about trying to serve others and trying to use his position to help as many people as possible. that's why my speech was so easy, because, you know, his vision for this country is truly something that we all share, so some of these characterizations are a little more complicated than i would attribute to him. >> i was surprised to hear you say you didn't see ann romney only because at this level of play there are so few people. are you remotely curious? >> you know, i think because i'm not truly at this level of play, you know, i really do try to stay outside of politics, because it keeps me grounded and focused on what's important. so it's not just not listening or not seeing the convention. i try not to spend too much time listening to pundits and the

peter baker, so romney's tax returns from last year showed he paid an effective annual rate of 14%. does this diffuse some of the journalistic expectations, some of it based on the fact that he paid little or no taxes in some years? >> he said not that he paid 14% but in the last 20 years he never paid less than 13%. he gave us a summary, a topline summary. it diffuses the speculation that some years he didn't pay any income tax. it makes you wonder what on earth he is trying to keep from the public. it came more about the offshore accounts, that kind of thing will trigger a lot of suspicion. >> and the media story line, lynn, a lot of it was about romney paying more taxes last year than he had to. >> right. now i just disagree with so many of my colleagues, i respectfully say, use that 14% number when everyone knows he got that number because he decided not to declare $2 million of his charitable expenses in order to say he paid more than 13% rate. >> the campaign doesn't dispute this. he didn't take all the charitable deductions. >> i give him credit for him. i for one never doubt

. >> now, but peter baker said in "the times" that clinton is not always effective.he supported in 2010 lost, but dana milbanks says the gamble will probably prove to be a good one, them taking a chance on bill clinton. why do you say that, dana? >> well, it's always a gamble because you never know exactly what's going to come out of bill clinton's mouth and he's already hurt -- he hurt obama on the question of taxes for, you know, whether to extend -- which ones of the bush tax cuts. he can be off message. he'll say what's on his mind. right now with fewer than 60 days to the election, his interests are very much in line with obama. they both want obama to win, for clinton's legacy, for hillary clinton and for obama. he has a real incentive to stay on message here. he went off script during the convention but he stayed on megsage. it appears, you know, for the next 55 or so days, he's going to be able to put aside his own ambition for the greater good. >> now, dana, i thank you for your time tonight. >> thanks, reverend. >> let me say this. i've not always agreed wi
