it is a little start with peter baker. let's talk about the gerry sixth committee.tonight? >> well, their work laid out the conspiracy, and jack smith is called it. through hearing after hearing, identified the major players, identified the key dates, the key moments. if you read this indictment and you read the jarry six report came out and the beginning of this year, you would feel like they are very much of a piece, in fact major elements of the conspiracy that jack smith is alleging here were known to us at the end of that hearing. so that committee did something that is rare in washington. it produced a very thorough, comprehensive picture of a major event in washington without the partisan rancor of a lot of committees these days. and laid the groundwork, you would argue, for the justice department found fall off and say the facts say that they laid out, we can bring the grand jury and define, under the statutes, how they constitute criminal offenses. >> katie, did what happened today vindicate the committee? we saw all sorts of republicans spent a lot of time

let me bring back peter baker. when you put this in a political context, if you're an incumbent, it is very difficult to get attention away from the other side that has a horse race going. until you get something like this as you know, peter. how much is riding on what happened in hawaii, what happens here in florida, and unfortunately what may be future disasters that are coming if what diane says keeps up in terms of president biden and his prospects for re-election? >> we expect our president these days to be in charge when we have moments like this, moments of disaster, maui or florida or anywhere else and they're happening with increased frequency. i've been covering presidents now for more than a quarter century and i've never seen them have to respond to nearly so many disasters in such a way. like a mayor having to chase the latest fire alarm in the city, making sure the apparatus and government is working and making sure they convey a message of compassion. i think that's where president biden got in some

"the new york times" chief white house correspondent peter baker. and former new york prosecutor and civil rights attorney. barb, thank you for staying with us tonight. i want to start with trump and 18 others. do you think all 19 are going to go to trial, or are we going to see plea deals before then? >> it seems unlikely all 19 would go to trial. in a rico case it is not uncommon to see a large number of defendants charged, but by the time you get to trial, many of them would have entered a guilty plea, and that's in part because there's often a hierarchy in a rico case. there's a kingpin at the top and there's people at the middle levels and then there's underlings. and oftentimes the understand llgs see they have exposure. i could see some of these defendants ending up cooperating, so carrying down the number of defendants to a small number before it goes to trial. >> there's still three unnamed coconspirators. what do we need to know about that? >> what we need to know as we're talking about everything in this indictment, everything jack smith

. >>> joining us now, "new york times" chief white house correspondent peter baker and "washington postporter jackie alamany. in addition to what it means in terms of being on the campaign trail for the other folks who are running, what about him logistically? now that we are at four, how does he pull off a presidential campaign as a defendant in multiple trials? do we have any idea what that's going to look like? >> no. there's no road map for this. there's no history to point back to and say, so and so did it this way. he will have four criminal trials coming up. he has a couple other -- two or three other civil trials coming up, which are important to him. i think even if some of these get pushed off, the number of motions hearings and discovery issues and pretrial skirmishes will be time consuming, certainly for his team, and probably also at some point for him. you don't have any way to get around that. he is going to end up campaigning to some extent in these trials or through these trials if he goes on trial in january, as jack smith wants him to do in the january 6 election over

. >> peter baker at the "times," can a sitting president spread lies about an election and try to employnment without consequence he asks. the question would have been just unimaginable a few years ago, but trump raises the kind of specter more familiar in countries with hisri of qu quc coups. what do you make of where we are? >> it has to come to the republicans. largely what we saw with the january 6 committee work is that republicans speaking truth to what happened. so trying to speak to republicans and what i think you have to point out the things about the trump lies that so many people told him about how much evidence do you need that the election was not stolen. republicans were telling him that. if he truly believes he won, should we not question his expens competence and where he is mentally? talk about the 40 million, the number he has taken from people who make 40 30,$,000, $40,000. he needs their $5 for his legal fees? >> and the timing of this. they say why didn't they bring it 2 1/2 years ago. is it because of the campaign. >> absolutely not. >> so why did it take so long.

"new york times" chief white house correspondent peter baker. and former u.s. attorney barbara mccabe. take us through what happened this morning with defendants, the lawyers, judge cannon. and this is another delay. >> reporter: yes, so carlos de oliveira today took a page out of the walt nauta playbook of delay. walt nauta had his arraignment on two separate occasions to obtain counsel. there was a judge from west palm beach who was alongside mr. de oliveira claiming there were details that had to be ironed out before a notice of appearance that would indicate he is permanent counsel of record on behalf of carlos de oliveira. the judge set the arraignment for tuesday, august 15th. if mr. de oliveira fires the paperwork and mr. trump did, de oliveira will not have to appear in court. i will note that not only was the delay sought but the delay was sought to august 25th. why that date? that is the next hearing under the classified information procedures act, cipa, on august 25th, for the motion for protective order. de oliveira's council asked for the reset dat
