peter baker, chief white house correspondent for "the new york times" who previously was moscow bureau chief of the washington post, and former cia director john brennan. thank you so much for joining us. john, i want to start with you on this. the idea that isis or someone in control of the isis telegram account has claimed responsibility for this, how credible is that, just from your experience? and what would be the motivation for isis to commit this kind of terror attack in russia? >> well, it's a very critical claim. especially given that the u.s. embassy issued a public warning earlier this month about extremists planning to carry out an attack. that usually refers to these fanatic islamic groups. isis-k has long believes the russians have suppressed the muslims in syria, afghanistan, and in the caucus esas well. therefore, i think islamic militants, it's very believable they were the ones to carry out the attack. the fact they mowed down individuals and clearly it was an effort to try to cause havoc and kill as many people as possible. so therefore, i do believe that we're heari

. >> let's bring in peter baker, chief white house correspondent for the new york times, esteemed msnbc political analyst. welcome. peter, in your new article you called the last two days the start of a month of campaign style barnstorming. what tone is the president setting for the rest of this election season, and contrast that with the donald trump's plan to get off of legal entitlement? >> well, i think he set an aggressive tone from the start. part of that is aimed at picking on donald trump, and part of that is aimed at reassuring his own supporters and the disenchanted supporters of 2020 who have left him for the moment. he is trying to both tell the democrats who are nervous about it, about his age, about his stamina, that he had a lot of vigor left. he has a history, he has fight, and he is ready to take it on. he is trying to convince those democrats and independents who may have drifted away, who don't support him, who tell posters they are not sold on him for this year that he has what it takes to be the president and to remind them of what they didn't like about donald trum

we also have nbc news justice correspondent, ken dilanian, outside of the supreme court and now, peter bakerm going to begin with you. welcome. "the new york times" just had polling out that shows donald trump was ahead among voters and these court cases aren't a lage factor in their decision making. what is is the economy. can you help explain that? >> yeah, look, there's still a disconnect between the positive economic numbers that you can look at there and for the president who is presiding over the economy right now. more people are feeling the economy is doing better than had felt before but they haven't given biden credit. i think that's a fundamental weakness for him going into this election. donald trump had an economy that was not that different than the economy we have now prior to the pandemic but he did a, you know, more vociferous job of claiming credit for it. calling it the best economy ever and convincing a lot of people that was the case. and biden has never been able to garner that kind of same political, you know, asset out of it. he wants to. he hopes that the time allows

nbc news correspondent garrett haake, and chief white house correspondent and political analyst, peter baker. peter, bring us into the planning from the white house's perspective. what should we expect? >> i think you're going to hear the president talk about a few things. first of all, he's going to talk about his accomplishments. he's going to try to remind the country of how things were when they were in the country when he took other the period, in the middle of the covid pandemic, lockdowns, social unrest in the streets. there was of course the january 6th attack on congress and the economy was in free fall. i think he's going to try to remind people how things have gotten better over the years, and take as much credit as he can. he's going to talk about reproductive rights, freedom, he's going to expand on the issue of abortion to say not just abortion but other rights like ivf and possibly same-sex marriage and gay rights are at stake in the election. he's going it talk about of course democracy and what he sees as the stakes of the election, former president trump threatening to come

we want to bring in peter baker msnbc political analyst and correspondent for the new york times. reat to talk to. you take me inside the white house, if you can, and the recording you have on how they decided to drop this aid now. >> well, the fact that they have been meaning to do this for a long time, for a lot of reasons, there are a lot of drop backs to this idea that you first of all have to deconflict airspace with the israelis. you have to be careful that your drop shipments don't hit somebody or hurt somebody on the ground. if you don't have them on the ground to distribute them, it's chaotic. more importantly, it doesn't deliver as much, in terms of humanitarian aid, as trucks do. they have not wanted to do this up until now. given the resistance to getting more trucks in, they're only getting several dozen a day, given the killing of 100 people just the other day, the humanitarian supply mission in northern gaza, they decided they had to at least give it an effort. it's more symbolic than it is substantive, because there's only so much you can do from the air. but they w

joining us now, peter baker, chief white house correspondent for "the new york times," and nbc news politicallyst. peter, great seeing you. how is the president trying to find the balance between his continuing support of israel while trying to get more aid to -- into gaza? >> reporter: we have a situation, of course where the united states is providing both the bombs that israel is using in its military operation and air dropping food pallets from american warplanes, so those who are on the ground affected by this military operation. it is a conundrum in a lot waive of ways, people see that as a sign of policy that they disagree with president biden, that he's being too supportive of israel in their view. they say what is the option here, if we didn't do anything, we would be criticized as well and there is a lot of trouble getting humanitarian aid in on the ground. they're taking desperate steps in order to try to get some, even though it won't be nearly as efficient as if they had allowed the trucks in. he's caught in between israeli government that is intent on moving forward with an oper
