peter barnes is in the element. what can you tell us, peter? >>peter: well, there is another candidate open the ballot tonight. his name is warm, cozy fire. for those caucus goers who think it is too cold for them and they do not want to go to the precinct. but, listen, weather does have an impact on elections. i did dig up a study from a political scientist would found that bad weather can reduce town out by 1 percent or so if it is really bad with rain or snow. the issue here is the town out to these caucuses is very, very low. they expect about 120,000 republicans to turn out tonight for the caucuses and the state has two million registered voters so 1 percent of that would be maybe 1,000 voters and that could make a difference. >>neil: peter, thank you very much. peter barnes. >> the 99 percent, we are the 99 percent! >>neil: what the heck? from occupy the money guys to occupy the des moines goes? don't laugh. the occupy wall streeters have their way they could make a mess of voting in the hawkeye state. they have disrupted scores of events

peter barnes is live in washington. a new report is out and it shows that u.s. companies added more jobs last month than even the experts predicted. >> that's right, shep. a.d.p., payroll processing company, released its monthly jobs report today. it said employers added 325,000 nonfarm work increase december, much higher than forecast and the highest in its records going back to 2001. one economist said the report suggests the economy is picking up steam and will stay strong this year. >> we don't see anything that would derail us in the very short-term, which means the momentum will carry into 2012. a little farther out, we got to worry about europe, yeah, we have to worry about washington, d.c., but i think the threats are overblown. >> adp said more than half of the gains last month were in small businesses, which historically are the engine of job creation in a recovery, shep. >> shep: peter, we also get indicators of planned job cuts. as it turns out, the number of planned job cuts has gone way down, too. >> that's right. a separate report from outplacemen

peter barns with all the great news. what's driving these prices higher, pete?perts blame the usual suspects, shep. higher oil prices caused by geopolitical tensions, higher demand for oil and gas from china, brazil and other country, refinery problems and buckle your seatbelt. last year gas prices ran up 30% from january to may heading into the summer driving season. if that happens again this year, we could be looking at new records we don't want. >> if the price increases by 30% like it did last year, that gets us in an area of about 4.25 for a national average. >> of course, higher gas prices already threaten the fragile economic recovery. probably the only good news in all of this is that markets do work eventually. higher oil prices are fueling more exploration in the u.s. and can did and regular oil fields in an oil tar sands examine shale, that helped help boost supply over time. and when we saw records in 2008 consumers cut back their driving, cut back their vacations, which could also help ease price pressures down the road. shep. >> shep: that hurt th

fox business news senior washington correspondent peter barnes is here to tell us what this means. >>d evening. a sweeping downgrade of the debt of nine of the 16 countries that share the euro as a currency. s&p blasted them for not doing enough to attack their debt problems. the action could increase their borrowing costs making it harder for the euro zone to fix the debt crisis and prevent it from spreading over here. france lost its prize triple-a rating just as the u.s. did last year. they are not both double-a plus. austria suffered the same fate. and s&p lowered the ratings on italy, portugal, spain and cyprus by two notches. they cut the rating because the policy initiatives taken by the european policy-makers in recent weeks may be insufficient to fully address ongoing systemic stresses in the euro zone. germany was the only major economy, bret, to keep the triple-a rating. >> bret: we will continue to follow that as well. thank you. still ahead is criticizing mitt romney over his business background having an effect in south carolina? but first, are you too fat to ride the fe

fox business network's peter barnes live in washington with more. peter?>> reporter: well, hey, jon. hauling the secretary of state up to capitol hill is just the beginning for angry republicans. the pipeline company itself, transcanada, says it will reapply for the building permit. approval could take another year or two to win, however, according to experts. so house republicans are also looking at strategies to speed this up. they are considering legislation to approve it outright by attaching it to a must-pass measure like extending the payroll tax cuts again. one big supporter of the pipeline, the u.s. chamber of commerce, is calling on congress to investigate this decision. it believes the white house political strategy here was to kill the pipeline now, win over environmentalists for the president's re-election, and then hope that voters forget about it by november, including union members that supported the project because it would create thousands of new jobs. >> the labor unions said this was politics at its worst and said that the blue class, mi
