peter barnes has details. peter? reporter: that's right, david. president is expected to sign executive orders on gun control sometime this week, based on recommendations from the law enforcement team. recommendations reportedly could focus on expanding background checks on gun buyers and closing exceptions for small scale gun retailers. current law exempts retail that's sell weapons online. another executive order could make it easy illegal for some people accused of domestic abuse to buy a firearm. >> these are not only recommendations well within my legal authority and the executive branch but they're also ones that the overwhelming of majority of the american people, including gun owners support and believe in. reporter: the president plans to take his case to the public in a televised town hall meeting on thursday night. some republicans on the presidential campaign say that if elected they will roll back obama's executive orders. >> president obama is talking about this week issuing yet another executive order trying to go after our right to

peter barns is with me now from these. peter, what's the latest? >> well, deirdre, the news here is that in previous e-mail releases, the state department has at least released the e-mail documents that contain classified or top secret information in a redacted form. but apparently these 22 e-mails are so sensitive that the state department and all of the intelligence communities reviewing this e-mail cache are saying no way. not going to put these 22 out. now, the department said that these documents were not marked classified at the time they were sent as we've heard before. but now they have been retroactively upgraded to top secret after this extensive review. their existence will likely only increase public scrutiny of clinton's use of private e-mail for government business. four days before the caucuses in iowa. polls there as nationally show many voters questioning clinton's honesty and trustworthiness. in a statement the clinton campaign said quote we firmly oppose the complete blocking of the release of these e-mails. this appears to be ov

peter barnes with the story. >> peter: it does provide a few more details on the incident that happened yesterday. i will read the statement. ten u.s. navy soldiers sailers, rather, safely return to u.s. custody today after departing iran. there are no indication that is the sailers were harmed during their brief detention. sailers departed island at 8:43 aboard the two command boats that they had been operating when they lost contact with the u.s. navy. the sailers were later transferred to shore by u.s. navy aircraft while other sailers took charge of the rcv's vessels and continue to the boat's destination. the navy will investigate the circumstances that led to the sailers presence in iran. yesterday while it was breaking right before the state of the union address, defense official said that one of those two vessels might have had engine trouble and drifted into iranian territorial waters and the other boat stayed nearby to provide assistance to it. but we are, of course, monitoring the situation and hope to get more details on how this all happened as the day progresses, maria. >>
