national security analyst peter bergen, author of "the rise and fall of osama bin laden," also mark hertlingr of the u.s. army in europe. peter, how effective are strikes like these in crippling a group like isis? >> well, i mean, if you look at the taliban, anderson, president obama ordered a strike on mullah man sure who was the leader of the taliban. he was killed, they replaced him, and now they control afghanistan. in that case, clearly it was ineffective. i do think the attack on bin laden, al quaeda never really recovered from that. it was already in bad shape. they had taken a lot of hits from drone strikes frrks arrests. the new leader of al quaeda has not been particularly competent. so, i think it kind of depends on each group. but we know isis will appoint somebody else. they appointed somebody else after abu bakr al baghdadi was killed during the trump administration. the war goes on. the etiology continues. one man's death does not kill this ideology which appeals to a certain group of people that failed in the middle east, central africa. >> general hertling, you knew this per

joining us now is cnn national security analyst peter bergen.ding "the rise and fall of osama bin laden." can you put this into context for us? the elimination of al qurayshi and what this means. >> i'm not sure it means a huge amount to be honest. al qurayshi, the leader of isis just killed, was virtually unknown. his last name indicates he at least claims to be a descendant of the prophet muhammad, an important thing for isis to have a leader who makes that claim. he made almost no public statements. he did not have some charismatic presence like osama bin laden or even abu bakr al baghdadi, who was killed in 2019. i'm sure they'll find somebody to replace him. isis lost its geographical hold in iraq and syria. still capable of mounting raids. we saw a big one in syria where they tried to release a number of isis prisoners, a bloody battle and hundreds were killed. so they're still capable of mounting those kinds of operations and they have affiliates in afghanistan with thousands of members. but i think overall, you know, it is not insignific
