back with me is a peter bergen and kim dozier. peter, when you look at this stepping back there is the immediate almost knee-jerk reaction to say it is unprecedented and it went undetected, how could they have not anticipated it? is it that simple? >> we don't know yet, but after 9/11 you recall everybody said there was an intelligence failure. after the 9/11 commission was formed over a year later, much against the bush administration's attempts to make sure didn't happen, it became clear the cia was constantly warning the bush administration in the summer of 2001 about a possible attack, not clear where it was going to be, but the bush administration really did nothing during that time period. now, the netanyahu government is going to come under considerable pressure from israelis about how did this happen. my guess is that, because this usually happens, there is usually a lot of noise but when you look back there are a lot of signals that you missed. something this big surely there are signals that were missed and, surely, there

here with me is director james clapper, peter bergen and dr. guy ziv is here as well. this is incredibly difficult to wrap one's mind around even with a powerful military, a well-regarded military as the israeli defense system is. you've got hostages on the ground, we believe. you've got a civilian population, director clapper, who is trying to get out. how on earth are you able to think about how you could move militarily? >> it beats me. i don't see how this works, frankly. what you're doing is the expectation, i guess, is to cram people that are already in the most densely -- one of the most densely populated areas in the whole world into an even smaller area with no organization on the part of their government and even if they were disposed to i don't think they have the capability to organize any sort of evacuation. i hope -- i would like to presume that the israelis have some information that leads them to a terrorist location or hostages. if they do, that's amazing at this point to know where the hostages are. so i have trouble getting my head around what's -- w

. >> with us right now is cnn national security analyst peter bergen on this. thank you for coming in. you have had some conversations in the past days of what are really the aims and goals of hamas. the idf says that this hostage video being released is a psychological warfare on the israeli civilian, and what do you think it is? >> well, there's that, and it is also proof of life that the hostage has been taken, and hostage-taking situation, and often the terrorist group will release a video, and obviously, it is very, very traumatizing for the family, but as you know, kate, you have got 199 hostages, and hamas claims 200 to 250, and you have palestinian and islamic jihad who claimed 230 in beginning, so it is not clear of how many have been taken, but this is a proof of life of one hostage, and so, we have seen tony blinken going to qatar to speak to the qatari government which is the most fruitful way that this might be resolved in some way that is, you know, to have the safe release of the hostages. they were helpful in getting five americans out of iran l

iran is essentially as peter bergen was saying on cnn earlier, it's essentially a branch of the iranian foreign policy machinery, but at the same time, the hezbollah, which has hundreds of thousands of rockets that could be very very catastrophic for israel, knows that israel's response would be absolutely devastating to the whole country, so lebanon is in no fit state to weather any kind of storm, let alone a massive storm of ordinance that the israelis would unleash. they have made that very clear. that's the worst case scenario from both parties perspective. there's a long way to go before getting to that position because of course you've got to get troops in there. i think probably and hadas was suggesting perhaps this was part of their planning, a large number of troops. the more troops you send in, perhaps the less amount of casualties you risk rironically because you swarm the place and flood it with israeli troops. then of course you've got to get out, and you cannot kill the idea of resistance against what ha hamas calls the jewish entity. >> sam kiley, thank you. anderson? >>
