peter brooks is a senior fellow for national security affairs, heritage foundation and former c.i.a.rotests in iran are not new. it happens every year on this day. but according to our sources on the ground, the protests this year are bigger and bolder and louder than usual. how do you take that into consideration along with the fact that it looks like iran and america are trying to reengage again on the nuclear issue? >> well, there's probably a couple of things at play here, a couple of dynamics. one is that their people probably oppose former relations with the united states. once again, the nuclear negotiations will come down to iran and the united states, even though others are taking part in them. the other thing is that there's always a possibility that iran is trying to take a tougher stand publicly so that they can affect the negotiations which will start again this week in geneva. they're gaming us a little bit. there's a number of things. iran is a very difficult place to figure outs because of the break in relations for so many years, the lack of diplomatic contact betwee

peter brooks is a former c.i.a.icer and senior feel owe for national security affairs at the heritage foundation. good to see you. >> good morning. arthel: so what should the u.s. do next in you've got the french foreign minister saying this is a fool's game, guys. i ask you, peter, is it even possible to negotiate a real deal where lack of trust is such a big factor? >> it's going to be difficult. both sides have staked out their position in these talks in geneva last week. right now we're in this sort of interim period where people are fanning out and talking to their allies, especially the united states and western powers, consulting with israel, consulting with allies and friends in the middle east, talking amongst themselves, the key five plus one, five nuclear powers plus germany and filling out how to get back into this. a lot of finger pointing going on. iranians say it was our fault. somebody on our side said it's the french's fault. iranians walked away from the deal. this is very difficult and there's a l

peter brookes, former cia officer and senior fellow in national security affairs for the heritage foundation. peter, when you see the headline you have to almost rate it a few times, homicide bombing outside the iranian embassy in lebanon. a state one often connects back to iran. what is the significance of this? >> well, there are a number of things at play here. first of all a continueing civil war in syria. this is spillover. the other major dynamic, jenna is the sunni-shia violence we're seeing and the rift going on in that part of the region. once against this al qaeda-affiliated group offshoot of al qaeda in iraq, attacked iran a shia state. in the southern part of beirut which is hezbollah, shia territory. there is lot of things going on here. it also shows, i'm concerned, is that you see the reach of al qaeda in the region. it is just not limited to iraq. , or to syria. now we're seeing in lobe lebanon as well. >> why now? >> i think the situation is on the ground in syria, my understanding is that the bashir assad forces, the government forces, are actually making great gains agains
