peter brookes, heritage foundation, senior fellow. start with why are we seeing this right now?g. a couple of dynamics could be going on. melissa, the president has new strategy. we're starting to up number of troops in afghanistan, probably up to 15,000. not perfect time of year in afghanistan, fighting season, spring, summer into the fall. this is cold there. so these attacks can be more effective. the taliban and islamic state want to undermine the credibility of the government, the people's support of the government. that is important to any sort of insurgency. i also think if you look at the recent attacks they have almost evenly split between the islamic state and taliban. they're competing with each other for followers, funders and foot soldiers as they move forward. melissa: some linked idea that the president pulling back funding to pakistan. they have been our frenemy and not our ally they should be. do you think there is a connection there. >> they could be. that is risky on the part of pakistan. the relations between the united states and pakistan are very difficult.

here to discuss, peter brookes. former deputy assistant secretary of defense. er bush 43 state department official. peter, let me start with you here. when i read this story, it was fascinating. i had no idea this was still going on. then the amount of deaths. 18-20 informants i in prison and possibly killed. how did he pull this off? >> my sense is because of his access into intelligence operations he was able to take specific information he was knowledgeable of and potentially share the with the chinese. he has not been charged with espionage to my knowledge. the indictment charges him with having sensitive defense information. so they may not be able to put together a case that leads to espionage. but if the inferences we have seen in the recording with correct, he could have shared this information with the chinese intelligence services that led to the breakdown of the intelligence network and the break down and death of chinese assets. how potentially dangerous could the situation be for us? >> i any pretty dangerous. this an example of the chinese doing a

joining me now to talk about this is peter brooks, a senior fellow at the heritage foundation, also auty assistant secretary of defense and a former cia officer. so you are the perfect person to discuss this with. what did your gut tell you when you first read or heard about this case? >> it is very troubling. you know, china is a very important country. our ability to gather information on potential adversaries is very important. think about china and north korea. think about china and the south china sea. there's a lot of things that are very important. this is the biggest espionage case in nearly two decades, going back to robert hansen who was an fbi agent who betrayed the united states by disclosing the names of american assets to the russians. and then before that, in the early 1990s, there was a man who also worked with the soviets. this is very very troubles, not only the public trust has been betrayed -- has been betrayed -- >> i'm sorry i have to interrupt you. we have to go to the senate floor. senate majority leader mcconnell has taken the floor. >> -- voted to avoid this.
