i am peter carmichael, the director of the civil war institute. i am a member of the history department here. welcome myeasure to good friend, stephen berry. stephen berry is the gregory professor of civil war history at the university of georgia. i have a feway rules i live by in our field and this is one of them. anything that stephen berry writes i have to read. brings berry always incredible, beautiful writing with rich insights. it is what i think many of us like so much. that is a good thing because his tok is so good that you want come to jealousy but you cannot because stephen is such a wonderful guy. he is a fantastic teacher. i have sent many students to work with him over the years. at the university of georgia he has -- he is not only a prolific scholar -- he has written or edited six books. my favorite was his dissertation, done sometime ago at the university of north carolina. his advisor is still teaching at carolina. another book i would highly recommend that he edited is a ingtastic book called "weird the war: stories from the civ

i am peter carmichael, a member of the history department. it is my pleasure this afternoon to welcome jason phillips jason ofllips is the professor civil war studies at west virginia university. he started his academic career at the inner city of richmond. he completed his masters at wake forest and is going on to rice university where he worked with john bowles who is retiring this year. a very important, famous southern historian. he has published two books. his first, "diehard rebel" published by the university of georgia. bookordinarily important if you want to understand the southern soldiers that some might consider to be zealots. he takes them on their terms. into their ideology and their culture, and it is an outstanding book. one thing about jason is i would say he has -- is never comfortable about how he does history. he is always looking for something new and something different not in terms of the topic but in methodology. that is why people come to wv you and study with him. and study with him. we have sent a number of kids from

peter carmichael. i am a member of the history department here at gettysburg college. i am also the director of the civil war institute, and it's my pleasure to start off this amy mauroorning with taylor. amy is an associate professor at the university of kentucky. she did her undergraduate training at duke university, her graduate training at uva, and as i mentioned, she is at kentucky. she only goes to schools where they are basketball powerhouses. being from indiana, i have a faint memory of when we were relevant in basketball. i will note that you won this a guy frome of indianapolis. amy has just published -- this is her book right here. freedom: journeys through slave refugee camps." it is published by the university of north carolina press and part of the civil war america series. this was a pretty good year, i would say. sit tight. it will take a while for me to tell you all the awards this important book has received. it received the time watson brown price from the society of --il war historians, 2019 from the organization of american historians, the john now

peter carmichael -- we know who he is -- he has an essay in this book as well. he talks about confederate keepsakes after the war, white who keep a variety of confederate mementos and how peter believed that can inspire action in the postwar south, to preserve what they believed to be confederate values, to make sure whites remain in charge in southern society. this idea, even if you do not agree, is an interesting perspective. it is a different way to think about objects. for a long time, scholars and people in general thought of --ects as mute, innards that they were things created by people and left behind. latour does not see it that way. >> that is a good place to pause and ask for questions. i hope you see the value in studying things and maybe even finding something interesting about the way we approach that analysis. if there are questions, walk up to these microphones here. knew of the possessions of charles merrill, the bible was not mentioned. what happened and why was it not on that list? >> i am not sure. it is the first thing i would say. that sugge
