i asked doctor peter chin-hong at ucsf about how likely it is to catch measles in these situations. > catch measles. it's probably one of the most transmissible infectious diseases we have, somebody with measles could be on a plane in a room. leave the plane, leave the room, and wanted two hours later. you can get into that space. and if you're susceptible, you can catch measles. >> you're urged to call your doctor if you think you were exposed, especially if you have a weakened immune system or you're pregnant, or if a baby was exposed, those groups can develop more serious complications. now, the good news is that the us, and especially the bay area, has a high vaccination rate for the measles. most people get the mmr vaccine when they are children. although the last few years there has been an increase in people refusing that vaccine. but those who have been vaccinated have a low risk of getting the virus. health officials say that they are working with the state now and with the cdc to try to identify the people that were exposed that includes the people on the southwest airlines
