peter hotez, who preceded you on the broadcast.est interest to have these vaccines go all around the world, certainly. what about this as we change a little bit the subject here, investors that got spooked by omicron. that happened in the dow, took a pretty huge hit, 900 points or so, but even before that, inflation fears were already alarming consumers. prices of gas, food, practically every other good spiked in october. and i know, sir, that you're a member of the blue-collar caucus, so what are your constituents telling you about this? >> well, a couple points to consider. obviously, the dow dropping 1,000 points is something that will make one sit up and take notice. but i would point out that that just puts the dow back to where it was a month ago and it's still significantly higher than it was three months ago, six months ago, or at the beginning of the year. all of the economic data is pointing in the right direction. we are actually the one country out of all the countries in the world that is better off economically today

peter hotez. so the thing we heard repeatedly from him, dr. hotez is you got to get vaccinated. you got to get boostered. we're only at about, i think, 60%, not even quite that full vaccination here in the united states. i mean, is that realistic to think suddenly this variant where delta didn't is going to push people to get vaccinated? do you think it will at least push people to get boosters in terms of making us safer in ways that we can do it ourselves, do you think this is a game changer? >> well, the problem is, chris, right now the major component of fighting the battle against omicron in the united states is the same as fighting the battle against delta. by getting boosted, you'll not only have a 30 to 40 fold rise in virus neutralizing antibody to prevent you from getting the delta variant or going to the hospital, but there's likely, as tony said, dr. fauci said, you're going to get a spillover against the omicron variant. i think that was a major message. the second component is vaccinating the kids. the third component, which he didn't say but was implied. if you've

peter hotez. we're talking about one of the biggest stars in the game and a league that at least made a show of standing tough to keep players, staff, everybody involved safe. so i wonder how important you think it is, what they ultimately decide to do, what the consequences might be for rodgers, potentially i guess the packers organization. do they have to stand up and back up what they said they would do? >> you know, chris, i see two problems in what's happened over the last few days. problem number one is this. we've now lost 150,000 americans who were unvaccinated to covid-19 since june 1. 150,000 lives that were needlessly lost whose lives could have been saved if they had been vaccinated. but because they succumbed to the kind of misinformation, disinformation, and what i now call antiscience aggression being espoused by people like aaron rodgers and others, that's not woke culture. this is antiscience aggression and it needs to stop. i think my second point is the fact that more or less wh

peter hotez. you've been learning what we know at the moment though it's still not a lot. what is your take on what you've heard so far? >> yeah. i think first of all, caitlyn, this variant is likely already globalized. that's been the story in every time we pred just about every continent. now that we've unveiled it in europe, canada, almost certainly it's in the united states in australia. that's not surprising, that's pretty much the same playbook that every variant exercises. i think there's a lot we don't know. we're hearing conflicting stories. some saying it's causing mild illness, others saying there isn't were and that's part of their clinical presentation. in terms of vaccine escape, this variant like if you remember the b. 13 p51 out of south africa lt year? it has similar mutations. if you get a high level there for you with some cross protections. they should have some level of protection. we don't know that for certain. our scientists over the weekend and this week at our texas children's center for vaccine development as well as almost certainly moderna, pfi

peter hotez, co-director for the center of is vaccine development at texas children's hospital, dean ol of tropical medicine at the baylor college of medicine. peter, good to see you again. thank you for being with us. i first want to ask you, what we know is different about this variant. is it more transmissible? is it -- does it make you circumstance? what do we know about it? >> so there's a lot we don't know. i think it's important to keep this in perspective, ali, as well. you know, you're hearing some of the european union leaders talk about this variant in apocalyptic terms and using this as justification to isolate southern africa. and right now, i don't think we're there. we may be there, but i haven't seen the evidence for it. maybe over the next week or so, we'll accumulate that. but, one, it does not appear to create more severe illness. so far, we've seen a lot of mild cases, as well. i don't think we have to worry that this is the andromeda strain. this is not it. and we've had other variants with some similar mutations in the spike protein and the receptor binding domai

i remember having conversations with peter hotez years ago about this, and at that point the generalys have passed. we have to address this misinformation. there's lot of people out there who, as you say, are just unsure. there are people out there who are cleary trying to create chaos and sow doubt. i think it does take a few different things, but reaching into different audiences, which we try to do, that's important because not everyone is watching or reading the news, but also i think social media, the democratization of information is so important, but as i go on this and try and put myself in the point of view of some people who are -- haven't been watching the story unfold over the last 20 months, it's hard to separate what is good and bad information. it's really hard. i think that's as big a problem in some ways as the virus itself. it spreads quickly. it can be as dangerous as the virus itself. it's something we'll have to do something about as world, because a lot of people who may have good-faith intentions but can't separate good from bad. >> if only there was a vaccine

peter hotez. stephanie, how's the vaccine mandate impacting numbers and services across the city? are these warning signs and bells coming to fruition? >> reporter: hey there. that's why the union leaders were out here this morning because they think it will affect the services from the if he wanted. alarming for people in new york city. they say it could affect response times and not just the fire department but you have thousands of people within the nypd who are unvaccinated. you have sanitation workers unvaccinated. and none of those people are allowed to come to work today and not getting paid. the fire department outside this particular fire house the union leader showed up at 6:00 in the morning. >> that's our issue, is we only got nine days to comply with the mandate. the teachers got 30 days. corrections has december 1 as their date to comply. all we are asking for is extra time, to get time to file the religious and medical exemptions and get the vaccination if they so choose. >> reporter: so city leaders are accusing the unvaccinated firefighters of putting new yorkers

peter hotez who has been on this program keeps stressing is, yes, there's omicron that we're talking about now but he's also worried about a delta surge, something already here, seeing more of that this winter. what are you seeing there in boston? >> that's exactly right, aaron. delta is still here and having an impact here in massachusetts and in new england more broadly. there's been a spike in cases in the weeks leading up to thanksgiving. on friday, just after thanksgiving, massachusetts reported 5,000 new cases. at mass general hospital behind me here they're actively treating 40 people with covid. this emerging new variant is coming at an inconvenient time for the hospital system in this region, because it's extremely strained for resources. that's not necessarily because there's a high rate of hospitalization for covid right now, there's not. but there are some serious pandemic-related stress impacts here in the system, primarily that physicians and nurses in this area are completely burnt out and many of the most critical departments are low on staffing. so right now, hospita

peter hotez. always good to see you, doctor. winter is coming, cases are ticking off.as signed off, the critical question is should every adult get a booster. >> the answer is very obvious, chris, the answer is yes. we have spoken about this before, the two mrna vaccine from pfizer, and moderna, were always three dose vaccines. we knew this when we gave the first two doses together, there would be waning immunity, it was a matter of time before a third dose was required. unfortunately it was not necessarily always mentioned that way, and discussed that way from washington, d.c. but that was always the case, and the good news is that third immunization, what that does is it really jacks up your virus neutralizing antibodies, strengthens, tc responses and gives you more durable protection as well. my hope is although it may not be one and done and two and done, it could be three and done, and based on some other vaccines that we give to kids, i'm hopeful, but we don't know for sure that we will not need annual boosters, that this could be it for a few years potentially.

peter hotez, co-director of the texas children's hospital center for vaccine development and dean of the national school of tropical medicine at baylor college of medicine. he's also author of the very important book "preventing the next pandemic." dr. hotez, will the cdc's expanded coronavirus surveillance efforts at the least four major u.s. airports allow the agency to find cases, contact trace, contain this variant or do you already fear it spreading unchecked already in the u.s.? >> well, it's almost certainly already here. whether these activities in airports will halt the importation of new cases. we haven't really seen this to be very effective since the beginning when this virus came in from southern europe and all eyes were focused on china. we've seen that we really don't have a handle on the fact this virus when a new variant appears and it's been true just about every variant as the variant is identified, it's already spread globally. so i think the major component of the efforts has to be on continuing to do the genomic sequencing which we've only now getting up to spee

peter hotez. >> he gave all kind of reasons for not getting the vaccine, if aaron rodgers walked intold you say to him? >> well, i think, one of the worst things he said was he ascribed this to wokeness and he was tone deaf oblivious to the fact that, ana, since june 1 we've lost 150,000 americans who have died from covid who are unvaccinated. 150,000 unvaccinated individuals whose lives could have been saved and not this disinformation and some of the terrible things that aaron rodgers said. and i think the way i look at it is that there is a vacuum here and what is happening is because the national basketball and national football league have been silent, they've not mounted a supportive pro-vaccine message and campaign out there that there is a vacuum. so this is why we're hearing from people like kyrie irving or aaron rodgers, these are becoming the voices of the nfl policy on vaccines. and so i also put at fault the nba and nfl commissioner, the team owners, that they're not stepping up and really putting on this vigorous campaign to talk about the importance of vaccinations to t

peter hotez, town at texas children hospital's, another vaccine developer.ng antibodies, longer protection. maybe not one and done or two and done but three and done. meaning i don't necessarily think regular boosters will be required. that is what people want to know if they get the booster shot, do they get another one in six months or a year? as of now doesn't seem to be the case. cdc says you're fully vaccinated after two shots, one with j&j. stuart: david spunt, thank you very much indeed. let's move on to the vaccine from pfizer. pfizer says it is 100% effective in preventing infections in 12 to 15-year-olds. 100% effective. doctor matt mccarthy is with us. doctor, it sounds very good news to me at least. you have children in that age group. do you have them vaccinated? >> this is great news. what pfizer announced that they followed kids aged 12 to 15 for four months after they got vaccinated. those in the placebo group, those in the vaccine group. they found 30 cases after those four months. they were all in the placebo group. that is 100% effective.
