well, earlier i spoke to dr peter hotez who's an infectious disease expert at baylor college of medicinesking how worried he was by the rapid spread of the omicron variant in the us. you know, one of the interesting things about this wave compared to alpha and delta is that we had a 4— to 6—week lag before the uk surge with alpha and delta, before it hit the us, so we had an opportunity to learn from the united kingdom on how to — and what we might expect. we don't have that luxury right now, this came up so fast, and it's causing pretty widespread social disruption from the standpoint that so many of the workers in various businesses — of course, including the airlines — are getting sick now with breakthrough covid, meaning they have had either two or three immunisations and yet, they're still getting breakthrough infections, so it's knocking out a lot of the workforce. so even though we don't really have a lockdown, as we would call it, effectively, it is almost acting like that because it is hard for businesses to operate. and, of course, our biggest concern right now are among health

peter hotez. 22% of vaccinated americans are boosted. are the efforts going to boost the number? >> reporter: there's a recent rise for demand for these shots. some messaging is working and seeing hesitancy. we talked to folks today here some saying that the new variant did push them to get a booster or shot for the first time and others saying they're tired of hearing about this. it might change the travel plans and some people are over it which we get and boosters and vaccines are a main tool for us to achieve that and keep things open. we spoke with some people confused about the eligibility for the booster. 22% is low. some said they were hesitant and didn't know if they needed it. a college student said this. >> still waiting to figure it out. see what i think probably the rest of the family does. with my grandparents is more important. with my mom and dad getting it i probably would and i think i'll wait to see what they do. >> reporter: health officials are encouraging folks not to wait saying that the antibodies are important esp

peter hotez.this down for us, let start with what this study shows for people who have gotten the pfizer vaccine, two shots. what can you tell us? what does it tell you? >> well, the first point to make is this is not a true vaccine effectiveness study. this is a laboratory experiment where what you do is take blood from individuals who have been vaccinated and you confirm that it neutralizes the virus that it was intended for in the laboratory and you compare those virus neutralizing antibodies to the omicron variant, and what it shows is not surprising that it confirms that people who have gotten two doses of the pfizer vaccine indeed neutralized the original but there a special drop in the neutralizing antibodies 40 fold. that may seem like an extraordinary amount but in virology, we deal in log values so the partial good news is that the antibodies didn't disappear entirely or a 1,000 fold decrease so theres some fectiveness. with two doses of the vaccine, in many cases it's below the level we

peter hotez, a professor and the dean of tropical medicine at the baylor college of medicine. thanks for joining us. you told my colleagues yesterday, reaekting to the late breaking news of the cdc guidance changing quarantine, you said, i think part of this is to avoid a panic and a national crisis. how much of it is that, keeping operations flowing? and how much is based on the science? >> i think it's a good balance of both, actually. and i concur with what the centers for disease control is trying to do. here's why. first of all, last week you had the revised guidelines for the health care providers in part because so much of the virus is released by people before they become symptomatic, and then just for a couple of days afterwards often, especially if you're vaccinated. so that made a lot of sense to keep our health care providers in the workforce because otherwise fatalities will skyrocket. once emergency rooms get overwhelmed, it's lights out. we see this big rise in mortality. we wanted to forestall that even if the severity of omicron is less, it will be offset by h

peter hotez told me last night that schools should consider delaying a return at least for a few weeks for these kids. obviously, that comes with serious cost to children's learning and mental health, parents not having child care, a whole host of things. how do you weigh the two? >> again, a very complex relationship because we know having kids in school not only advances their academic world, but their socialization and so many others. however, i think a lot depends upon what's going on in the local communities. we have a patchwork across our country, and even within individual states. what i mean by that is in some parts of the country like the mid atlantic or in the washington, d.c. belt way where we know that omicron is raging, we may want to make a different decision than we do in other parts of the country where we have much lower prevalence of virus. i know a lot of universities across the country have gone to remote learning for the first month of the spring semester. we have not made that decision, but we're monitoring the situation carefully. as of yesterday, we've got a tot

peter hotez, dean of the college of medicine at baylor. great to speak with you.iew, are we overestimating or underestimating the threat of the omicron variant right now? dr. hotez: i think it is not so much that we are over underestimating -- over or underestimating. i think we are missing the third rail, and that is where our vulnerability is. let me explain. the first rail is the delta variant. that is still with us. that is surging. now you've got omicron, which is so highly transmissible. now would you are starting to see a lot of people getting infected and semester ordinary numbers put out there by the nih director over the weekend, and terms of number of new cases on a daily basis. but here's the third pace that i think it's our greatest fuller ability, and that is our health care workers who are getting symptomatic covid. not necessarily sick enough to be hospitalized, but sick enough to be knocked out of the workforce for a period of time so they can't come into work. that is happening on an already depleted health system infrastructure. we have lost som

peter hotez, the co-director for the center for vaccine development. good to see you. start with the second confirmed case of the omicron variant, this person in minnesota. the health department says that he recently returned from -- had recently travels to new york city for a big conference at the javits center. what do you make of this with the catch yacht, of course, that we're going to see more cases as they continue to test more to find more cases of this omicron variant? >> yes. i think, kate, the difference is that this one was likely acquired locally within the united states either within minnesota or this traveler picked it up during a visit to new york city. so potentially now it's on both coasts and that means we'll continue to see the number of cases rise. in terms of what we're dealing with, therefore, we should consider the possibility that now we've got to fight covid on go fronts, one, the existing delta variant, which is still highly transmissible, and probably this omicron variant as well as the cases pick up. one of the big questions is will omicron
