political analyst peter matthews joins me now from los angeles. he is also a professor of political science at cypress college. good to have you with us. >> good to be here, rosemary. >> so mexico's foreign minister, as we heard there, thinks his country and the u.s. are working together every single day, displaying strong cooperation on migration. that seems to be at odds with how president trump views the relationship. what do you make of these two very different views of what's happen right now between the two countries? >> they're just as different as being on different sides of the border. and president trump doesn't seem to understand daca. because any daca eligible person has to arrive in the united states by 2007. these folks coming up to the border to apply for political asylum or what have you would never be eligible for it to begin with. trump needs to understand the policy before we can even deal on it. i think -- midterm elections. that's why -- hard line. >> all right. okay. i don't know whether it's me, but i can't hear you very wel

peter: what is going to happen next? matthew: i would disagree.orenk merkel should show leadership here, more current, and say we need to do this. this is important and here is why. that's what has beeeen missing. the germans liked macron like they liked europe. they like it in the abstract. but when you get down to details, that's when it gets complicated. you talk about measures that might force germany to pay more or put more german resources at risk and all of a sudden, the stop signs go up. this has been the big frustration for the french in these discussions. the problem is time is running out and at the eu level, there is a mountain of things that need to be done, from selecting a new ecb president to a new commission president, a new council president, new parliament, completing the budget. they haven't succeeded in completing the next budget under the current european commissioner and it doesn't look like they are going to. how thisicult to see macron and merkel dialogue is going to result in this great leap forward that we have been hear

joining me now are political analysts michael genovese and peter matthews in los angeles. thanks for being with us again, both of you. i'd just like to explore why you think that president trump chose the day he did to conduct these strikes. many people thought that they might not come this weekend because the investigators from the opcw haven't finished their investigation yet. so perhaps, michael, if we could start with you on that, why do you think this timing was the one the president chose? >> well, you don't want to signal too clearly what you're going to do and when you're going to do it. you also remember you have three different countries involved and they all have their different time pressures and political pressures. so president trump especially has a very, very short time fuse because there's so much bad news that's come out today. whether it's about his attorney and about paying to silence women that he and his friends have been with. so there's a tremendous amount of bad news in america, and i'm not saying this is a wag the dog situation. but the president

so joining me now to examine a few of them are political analyst michael jen vase see and peter matthewsn los angeles. appreciate you both being with us. if we could start with something, when the president said earlier the combined american, british and french response to these atrocities will integrate all instruments of our national power, military, economic, and diplomatic. matthew, if we could tart with you, what else is in the president's arsenal? >> well, i think if this is a one-off and if it's just something that makes him feel good, gets immediate gratification, i think the response will be underwhelming and impact will be underwhelming. if it is a coordinated effort not just for today but nor tomorrow and beyond that, might have a deterrent effect. by that we mean having more sanctions and more military pressure. but remember, we're in a box because of russia. the presence of russia limits our ability to move, limits our ability and what we can do and so maybe what we can expect is that this is a symbolic act. it's a statement. but it's not going to have tremendous impact. aft
