i don't know if you know montgomery, peter, but i have been a number of times. eally is the heart of the south, and it actually has quite the rail access, and even sea access down river. so, montgomery was actually a very good, central position to be the confederate capitol. but once virginia joined the confederacy, there were many rich people in richmond who felt that, for reasons of prestige and so forth, the capitol should be moved there. at any rate, the confederate congress in montgomery voted against it. no, we're going to keep the capitol here in montgomery. and jefferson davis was fine with that. because as a commander-in-chief and as the chief strategist, if you like, of the south's war, he would've preferred to be there. yes, to be able to go forward and confer with his battlefield commanders if necessary, but he would be able to control the war better from montgomery. by moving up to richmond, he would be barely 100 miles from washington. i mean, you know, what more of a magnet could you create in terms of inviting you north to invade you than move you
