joining me peter welch of vermont. good afternoon, sir. >> good afternoon. >> do you agree with the president? sgr i think it is great. to cross that divide, it really requires you to engage your heart. it is not a legislative matter. it is a heart issue. one of the greatest and most liberating human emotions is acceptance and what the president is saying, i think, is that it is the quality of the love the two people have and it is not the gender, and two people who decide they want to be with each other and treat each other with respect, they want to be constant to one another and help each other get through this confusing situation we call life and accept it, that is a very good and liberating thing. >> you say it is a personal issue. as you know, for many people it is a deeply held they logical issue and the churchs itself in many denominations does not support this. >> that's right. that's what makes it very difficult and there was nothing in the president's personal background that made it comfortable for him to a

joining us now, democratic congressman peter welch of vermont.>> good to be with you. >> nice to have you here. you say that a deal is a deal. what do democrats plan to do? >> well, the republicans with this ryan plan are running from the agreement that they made. the supercommittee had a shot. they could put everything in the table and included revenues which would have softened the cuts both on the pentagon side and on the domestic side. they failed. but the agreement then was automatic cuts would go into effect when we get back to washington in january and half would come from the pentagon and half from domestic discretionary. there would be shared pain. is it realistic that you would fence off the pentagon and in fact break the deal, try to have your cake and eat it too because the republicans refuse to include revenue as part of the equation. incidentally, realistically, can we get to the debt reduction that we need when we say that the pentagon has to make no contribution? keep in mind, the budget there was $670 billion last year. over ten

i see we are joined by peter welch this evening and i'm sure he has a words to share with us about supporting a bipartisan violence against women act. well well thank you. -- mr. welch: thank you. the challenge is whether we are going to take seriously the violence that is inflicted against women throughout this country. and this legislation has to address what is a very serious problem in this country. women are being subject to violent attacks. and do we have it in our heart, do we have it in our will to provide legal protections to women who are the victims of assaults and violent conduct in this country? it's really that simple. and that should apply to all women. and any person who is attacked on the basis of gender should be protected and what their views are about anything other than -- what their views are in politics, what their views are in sexual ownertation, what their views are on anything, are irrelevant to the basic, independent right that all of us have, men and women have, incidentally, to live our life in peace and with protection and with confidence that our physical integr
