they are called grant's first petersburg offensive and many of the combat sites are preserved in petersburg national battlefield, so most of you have visited some of these places where that combat occurred. much less familiar are the actions that immediately follow the first offensive. operations conducted between june 21 and july 1. these initiatives including a two corps infantry effort and one of the world's most extensive cavalry raids, are collectively known as grant's second petersburg offensive and are the subject of my talk this evening. at the conclusion of the first offensive, army commander george gordon meade confessed to grant that he found it a source of great regret that i'm unable to report more success. grant withheld any criticism. i'm perfectly satisfied, he said. that all that's been done could have been done, and that the assaults today were called for by the appearances and information that could be obtained. grant then advised meade, now we'll rest the men and use the spade for their protection until a new vein can be struck. this promise of inactivity and static warf
