rick. >> this trial finally getting underway about eight and a half years after petersen's third wife dead in a bathtub inside her home. she had accused her husband of abusing her during her marriage. she had written a letter to the local prosecutors detailing the abuse perhaps not going straight to the police because her husband served on the police force. the couple separate ned 2002 separated in 2002. on leap night february 29th 2004 he claims he took his two sons to the local aquarium in chicago, they lived outside of the city. when he went to drop them off later in the day his estranged wife didn't answer the door, it was locked. the next day petersen had a locksmith open the door to the house and her body was found in the bathtub. the case was closed until peter son's fourth wife, stacey went missing in 2007, and that's when investigators reopened the case and new autopsies were performed, one by michael baden, and the findings concluded that she had been involved in a struggle before her death, one that left her with a laceration on the back of her head as well as other cuts an

seven years after being sentenced death row for killing his wife, scott petersen still claims he is innocent he filed an appeal to his conviction. he says he was a victim of presidential publicity and misconduct by the jury. >> we find him guilty and the crime of murder. >>pam: of the guilty verdict in november of 2004 touched off a wild celebrations. prosecutors were unable to produce a weapon or a witness, but they had plenty of evidence that peterson was a philandering husband that less is right live at home while spending time with his mistress. lasik is a bandage on christmas eve of 2002. her body and that of her unborn child were found in the day for months later, not far from a place where peterson said he had been fishing on the day she disappeared. his 423 page appeal says the san mateo county jury was tainted by the media coverage such as this a billboard across the street from the courthouse. other grounds for reversal, the judge unfairly excluded any juror opposed to the death penalty. he unfairly included evidence of questionable value that the jurors themselves acted improperly

joining me first is barry petersen with what we're learning about some of those who died. barry. >> reporter: the effort today has been to identify the dead. so far names of 11 of the 12 victims, and the release of every name is news that is devastating to family and friends. on his '27th birthday, alex sullivan had much to celebrate-- his coming one-year wedding anniversary, and from the batman premiere he tweeted, "oh, man, one hour till the movie and it's going to be the best birthday ever." then came the chaos. his desperate father, tom, captured in this picture, hunted for word. >> call me. find my son, call me! >> reporter: late last night, the worst news possible-- alex was dead. he was one of the victims remembered at his makeshift memorial. also killed was matt mcquinn, also 27. when the shooting started he jumped on top of his girlfriend, samantha yower, shielding her from the gunfire. she was shot in the leg but his last wish was granted-- she will live. john blunt also gave his life for the one loved, push, girlfriend jansen young after a seat before she was sh
