commissioner peterson: i feel strongly that we should uphold 25 when there are nearby schools. vigilance is needed. in a tourist area, i have not heard any evidence of school-age children. i think it is important that this board support the department, the law, and we need business owners to take it serious. president goh: i am interested in supporting the department in this case. i found the notion that we had an employee who did it, the employee was fired, and then finding out the employee was the son of one of the owners, i found that interesting. and that the department could have gone to 90 days and only did 25 i seem to think is fair. if there are no other comments from the commissioners? commissioner fung: you know, they asked for an extension. we gave them one week of discussion time. if they had come on last week, they would have more than likely gotten a five-day reduction. their case is no different than the other two cases that were there. and i would support that. it could have been bigger, but i don't think we will be able to get a larger reduction. commissioner h

more on what path the organization will chart in the future, simon johnson, a senior fellow at the peterson institute for international economics. good to see you, simon. you know the imf well. what is going on inside this organization as we speak? >> well, it is a little unclear, though to those of us on the outside. there is not a lot of communication. we see the statements from the european leaders and now from the chinese, but it's quite a mystery exactly how and when and if the imf will make the next move. >> he hasn't been fired. he hasn't resigned. he hasn't even been put on leave. isn't that strange? >> that's my understanding of the situation and i can't account for it, so i would rather leave it at that. >> let's take a broader picture then. here is a man who is apparently very adept at the kind of diplomacy that is so necessary at the moment. he was on his way to see angela merkel to presumably help bail out the greeks, if such a man is in such a position, does that mean that the institution stops functioning in the way it should function, especially at this moment of crisis? >>

and michael and the whole group in the peterson foundation had done is based on dealing with this over the long run, so my view is if you deal with it over the long run and tell the american people the truth i think that we can work through this. now i know some people will say the election in new york yesterday for congress proves that's not true but i completely disagree with sat. the republicans ran to the left of the democras on medicare in the last election. the excoriated us for all e savings that is now embedded in congressman rye in's budget carroll and the plane to the claim we cut medicare when what they did is to cut the reimbursement rate for medicare advantage and put the money into lengthening the life of the medicare trust fund and closing the doughnut hole, which according to kathleen sebelius of the paper is saving money because we are also requiring a discount on the drugs bought in volume which we should do i think. >> but do you think that the recent new york was a referendum on this issue or was it about something else? it's sometimes easy to over interpret. >> it
