kristen: pfizer says it started testing an oral antiviral drug. tell us about that. >> the next i think leap in in i medicines for covid is these oral drugs. many are similar to the hiv inhibitors. they are kind of like very easy to take. i am very excited about them because you can give it to somebody early on, you can use it as exposure prophylaxis, postexposure prophylaxis. there are many other uses for it potentially apart from treatment. whenever there is an outbreak, even though people are vaccinated, we would give the people around that person like in a nursing home, that oral medicine. it has been shown to prevent transmission. i would safer both treatment as well as prevention, i could imagine this drug being used if the side effect profile is good. which it appears to be so far. kristen: pfizer announced today it will -- the cdc will the vaccine for children ages 5-11 within days. quickly dose for kids ages 5-11 is one third the dose for adults and at the same efficacy as when they looked at ages 18-25. so, we expect a fda approval for t

my message today is this, if you've got the pfizer vaccine, you have the pfizer vaccine in january, february or march of this year and you're over 65 years of age, go get the booster. >> to qualify for a booster you need to have been fully vaccinated with the pfizer vaccine at least six months a and you need to be over 65, have an underlying health condition or be a front line worker. >>> that booster shot got a double dose of approval. those are the scientists who advise, california, nevada and washington on vaccine policy. they reviewed the evidence and made the same recommendation as the cdc. now california is ready to start offering booster shots. >> u.s. doing pretty well. take a look at the numbers here. cdc says 75% of americans 12 and up have had one shot. the number dips a bit to 64% for american who is are fully vaccinated. looking to california, well above the national average. cdc says more than 83% of eligible californians had one dose. nearly 69% are fully vaccinated. >>> santa clara county wasted no time within hours of the booster shot approval. two clinics got to work giving

pfizer applied and will be heard first to see if they can do a booster rollout and pfizer will be relying on the israelis for the data that they have. let's take a look at what the israelis have found about the effectiveness of a booster, of a third shot. so this -- the israelis sort of spotted the problem. they found this summer that those who had been vaccinated in january had more than twice the risk of breakthrough infections compared to those vaccinated in april. that was the sign that something was not quite right. so then what they found later is that the booster reduces the odds of infection by 70% to 84%. and in people age 60 and over, a booster decreased the relative risk of severe illness by more than ten times. i'm sure we'll be hearing about some of this data when pfizer presents to the fda advisers on september 17th. as far as the political part of this, the back and forth, when is this going to happen? i'm going to sort of bottom line it here. pfizer will likely be offering a booster probably around the week of september 20th. so if you got pfizer, you may be able to get a
