julian: we are talking about the pfizer vaccine because it just got the full fda approval but i want to get your opinion on moderna and johnson & johnson. do you think this paints those two vaccines is less desirable for people who perhaps still have not gotten their shots yet and might be thinking, which shot should i get? >> you know, probably not for moderna. because moderna is only three weeks behind pfizer. pfizer applied at the beginning of may. and moderna applied for a full approval on may 31st. we're going to see moderna approval coming within weeks. johnson & johnson is a little bit behind, not because it is not a great vaccine but because they are waiting for their two dose trial to see if are better than one dose, especially with delta. that's going to come later. it will probably take two or three months. but moderna expected soon. i see little difference between moderna and pfizer. there was a mayo clinic study that showed that will express -- less reinfection with mom derna than pfizer. it is not less desirable but pfizer got there first. julian: by the end of the year

the fda could grant full approval for the pfizer vaccine as early as today. remember, it's been operating to this point under what's called emergency use authorization. and many tens of millions of americans have been vaccinated. but making it fully approved could be a major step in ramping up evacuations as the delta variant fuels infection surges in many states. medical correspondent elizabeth cohen joins me now. elizabeth, explain why making this fully approved would be so significant. >> you know, jim, in some ways it's not going to make a difference for people like you and me. we're already vaccinated. we got it under emergency authorization. it's the same drug. same clinical trial with more than 40,000 people. with the approval they've had more time to look at that safety and efficacy data. once it is approved then the thought is that people might feel more comfortable. the unvaccinated might feel comfortable with it. let's take a look at that and then some other elements that could mean this approval will make a difference. so again, it could encourage

the pentagon saying they're preparing to mandate the pfizer vaccine at this point. what more can you tell us about that? >> this was in line several weeks ago. they would make it mandatory for service members to be vaccinated. they said if one of the vaccines, like pfizer, got a full authorization then they would make that mandatory before that. so the big question going forward now is once there is a overall department of defense guidance, the services have the ability to then sort of roll out their own implementation. they can say all marines have to be vaccinated by this date or that date. so when will that happen? what is important for viewers to know is once the actual guidance comes out that doesn't mean that everyone has to be vaccinated as of that day. and we're talking active duty and guard and rep serve. that is just when they will announce their implementation plans. >> already, a lot of news in that briefing. thank you both so very much. >> we will dig more into the breaking news. pfizer has full approval, but will that actually convince more people to ge
