pg&e crews are here hard at work trying to get power restored to the homes in gilroy. the good news is i was told power has been restored to most of the homes. gilroy break the record reaching 109 and that caused underground equipment to fail so hundreded had no power. a man was concern was getting to work. >> i was more concerned about not weighing up on time so i gave my boss a call and said i may oversleep but it worked out. >> you are were early enough. >> i made it. >> video from last night shows the power outage creating a black out. 12,000 customers report power in san jose and gilroy and by 10:00 3,500 customers were without power. currently san jose has 152 customers without poe we are and that number dropped significantly in the past hour. in gilroy, 75 customers have no power and pg&e hopes to have the rest of the customers become online by 8:00 this morning. >> power in berkeley and other parts of the east bay is back on after an outage caused by a squirrel. pg&e said the critter caused a shortage at the substation when it came in contact with a traps follo

pg&e tells us the bizarre reason for the outage. a squirrel got into the el cerrito substation and damaged equipment. calls started coming in at 8:00 tonight. at its peak 45,000 people were without power from berkeley to albany to richmond and el cerrito. >> we just heard actually the reason why it went out is because a squirrel got into a substation and got fried. >> oh, really? i was told it was the heat. that's what the manager said, it was probably the heat. i didn't know anything about a squirrel. >> reporter: pretty crazy, right? >> yeah. >> this is the substation that was affected. b.a.r.t. shut down the downtown berkeley station a couple hours. trains are running as normal again. besides the 45,000 people who lost power because of the squirrel, another 7,500 pg&e customers in san jose and gilroy also lost power tonight, but those were heat-related blackouts. this was the hottest day in almost a year. >> yes. >>> triple digits widespread away from the water. sansan ramon 108 degrees today, sanford 101, san leandro, 90, perspe

pg&e has said it thinks part of the massive fine is tax- deductible. the 2010 explosion killed 8 people and injured dozens more. pg&e has already promised not to appeal the penalty. >>> san francisco is being told to stop storing some of its water in the hetch hetchy reservoir during the drought. the city gets about 85% of its water from the reservoir in the sierra. hetch hetchy also stores water san francisco draws from the tuolumne river. now regulators have ordered the city to stop this practice for now. san francisco has several century old claims to the river. it's not clear how much water it diverts from the tuolumne to hetch hetchy. >>> and as the drought drags on a lot of people are trading in their lawns for artificial turf and now one bay area water company is catching some heat for suggesting a rebate for that. john ramos explains why. >> reporter: most water districts in california are offering rebates to tear out lawns and replace them with native plant gardens that use a lot less water but east bay m.u.d. got heat for proposing a rebate f
