energy is not cheap from pg&e. we pay a lot. it's not like pg&e is somehow the low cost provider, it's not. it's the highest or among the highest in tractor-trailer country because of its own negligence. we in san francisco have experience and you heard this from the mayor and the city attorney, firsthand, that the local obstruction and the children's museum it's my old supervisor directing. when i was on the board of supervisors, we worked very hard with the community to get that incredible community resource, rehabilitated and upgraded so that we can have access to science for our kids and including kids from all over the city. so that we can could have summer camps there and after school programs and amazing resources. we got it done. it was right as i was leaving the board of supervisors and going to the senate and i get a call from rec and park. pg&e was refusing to inter connect the randel museum to the power grid and refusing to turn on the lights. after all that work, by the community, all that community in the city, pg&

pg and e has admitted that their equipment probably started the huge fire the judge has now given pg until august, 6th to provide detailed information on the tree that fell on a pg and e power line in the area where the dixie fire started. pg and e says they plan to meet the judges deadline. the dixie wildfire has now burned more than 463 acres in plumas butte, lassen and to him. counties since it began on july 14th to put that in perspective, that's an area larger than new york city containment has now dropped to 21% after wind helped the fire grow in the last two days. 370 structures, including homes and businesses have been destroyed and eight people are reported missing. but so far there are no confirmed deaths to give you an idea of the exact location of the dixie fire. here's a map showing the wildfire in relation to notable areas that are close by it's smoke can be seen in the town of paradise, which is about 45 minutes away, and the people of paradise for the people of paradise. the dixie fire is bringing back memories of the 20. 18 camp fire, which claimed more than 80 lives

anchor: we found out that the pg&e shut also beginning now. more than 10,000 bay area customers could lose power tonight. anchor: it comes hours before red flag warning takes effect, a clear sign of how high the risk is now. let's get to leslie brinkley with who could be affected. reporter: dangerous winds coming. pg&e told me they are moving forward with a preemptive power shut off the customers, starting 6:00 for the next couple of hours. those customers have been notified yesterday and today that the power is actually being cut off. of those 51,000 in northern california, 10,000 customers losing power or right here in the bay area. perilous dry brush and drought conditions will be amplified by low humidity and high wind, with the red flag warning for the east bay hills in the north bay. pg&e warned that public safety power shut also possible. >> the majority of the customers are in the sierra foothills and other counties. >> over 50,000 customers are facing power outages. things look tame in the morning with a few notified. by afternoon, th

the fly fire eventually merged with the dixie fire in plumas county, pg and e. issue with a particular circuit. back on july 22nd 11 minutes after the alarms went off wildfire cameras recorded smoke coming from the area where the tree and the line we're located a pg and e just met with state regulators to discuss its use of power shutoffs to prevent wildfires. the utility specs. those events will happen more often this fire season but as investigative reporter brooks jarocz tells us, pg and e says it hopes to make cutting the power a last resort. the huge dixie fire and smaller fly fire that merged with it in the sierra nevada made both have been sparked by trees falling on pg and e power lines are firefighters have been on the front line. a significant increase it fires this year that have already burned significantly more acres than we were at the same time period last year, which is why pg and e and other utilities have been called to task by the california public utilities commission. the focus readiness plans to shut off power to reduce wildfire risk fully

pg&e says it will be an extremely number of customers. the utility is concerned that winds forecast for tomorrow could knock down powerlines and start wildfires in the extremely dry vegetation. so if you live in one of the three counties in the north bay i mentioned you can check with pg&e to see if you would be directly impacted by plugging in your address. one year ago today we saw the start of the scu lightning complex fire that burned through the east bay and the south bay. up until this point last year, only 300,000 acres had burned throughout the state. by the end of the year, that number skyrocketed to 4.25 million acres. the scu lightning complex fire was responsible for almost 400,000 acres here in alameda county. where i'm at in contra costa and santa clara counties and areas further east into the central valley. our meteorologist rob mayeda reminded us of this radar loop he posted at that time. and it shows the hundreds of lightning strikes throughout the bay area that started roughly 900 fires in our region between august 16th

reporter brendan vitamin has been digging into pg&e for months.uncovered and why it matters. cornell: the california public utilities commission is an incredibly powerful state agencies. it sets tens of billions of dollars in rates that you pay on the utility bills and it is supposed to make sure that companies operate safely. so powerful the constitution made it independent from the state's political leaders. the commission are like judges under state law. the governor does not have the power to fire them once they are appointed. despite that, the cpuc made a practice of taking orders from governor newsom's office anyway. we can see it in these emails obtained in our investigation of pg&e and the state governments response. these messages show they wanted to do something really basic, send a letter to companies asking how they are treating companies with hardships during covid. it took the cpuc for days to send that letter because they had to get two different levels of approval from governor newsom's staff. the governor's office and office of em
