let's take a live look right now at pg and e's outage website. as you can see, power still out for a large portion of oakland of that red. right? there is where the outages are happening. more than 47,000 customers right now are still without power. >> power was restored, though, to alameda sometime after 05:00pm this evening. alameda power officials said there was an issue with a pg e transmission line. it left the posey and webster tubes as the only ways in or out of alameda for much of this afternoon's, you can imagine the traffic that folks were dealing with. you can see those cars were piled up, trying to get over the park street bridge earlier today, many businesses had to shut down for the day as they were unable to operate without power. others tried to work through the outage. >> i originally thought i believe the good news because i was mixing what was going on that i for sunday like it's kind of chaotic busier days. most people come here for our softer. so, you know, partners, officer people have been coming and he's about stuck out th

perhaps you've heard pg&e and its counterparts's explanation. demand was up and wholesale gas prices spiked. >> this increase is much larger than we could have ever anticipated. >> reporter: we dug in and discovered a disconnect. natural gas prices are regional and change daily. california gas prices were four, five, and almost six times higher than the rest of the u.s. for days. in some other parts of the country, there was extra gas. so much so some producers were paying others to take it off their hands of. >> natural gas demand has gone down. it is below average right now. >> reporter: so why did prices shoot so high in california? several analysts pointed to us three issues. reduced storage, pipeline problems and chilly weather. >> beautiful and clear but so cold. >> the weather explanation checks out. it's been frosty here. >> our high temperatures will only reach the 40s -- >> we needed gas fast. but -- >> in california, the natural gas storage levels were lower than normal. >> our tanks were only about two-thirds full. why? we asked one

pg&e delayed complications closing 101. andrea nakano spoke to families in east palo alto. >> reporter: a lot of the people just coming out to their cars to charge their phone so they can get some information on when the power will come back on. many of the residents say the worst part about this has been living in the cold. >> no good. no good at all. there is no heat. the house is really cold. >> reporter: selena has been sitting on her couch in the dark with a blanket to keep warm. temperatures have dipped into the 30s overnight in east palo alto. for these residents, staying warm has been impossible. roderick patterson lives right next door to the latu family. he says it is just as cold inside his house as it is outside. >> it is hard. really hard. very cold. >> reporter: the residents have been getting texts from pg&e about when the power will be turned back on. selena latu said it was supposed to be in the afternoon but her home remains in the dark. >> there is no warm water. and the stove is off. all the food in the

pg&e also points out that the drought has played a role. hydroelectric power generation is down because of low water levels, which has forced pg&e to use more natural gas for gas-fired generators. the utility says it does not mark up the cost of gas, rather passes the cost they pay on the market to us, the consumer. we pay an extra $45 for gas this january compared to last january, about $30 more this february. but in december, we know people who were paying $200 or more than they did the prior december. >> just don't use your heater. we kept it at 62 degrees. >> reporter: you haven't seen the impact yet? >> no. our building went from being around 500, 600 bucks a month to close to 800 a month. >> reporter: the krp uk says the price peaked on december 22nd when natural gas for us was seven to eight times higher than the southeastern park part of the united states. on january 31st, western only about two times higher, which means we could be trending back to normal. yesterday governor newsom sent a letter to the federal energy regulatory com

we asked pg&e what the holdup is. and a fresh look at the damage from the powerful winds across the bay area. that down the hatches. temperatures are dropping across the bay area. the next stop on this weather roller coaster. we can tell you it is a mess out there. let's go to redwood city right now. this picture says 1000 words or more. this massive tree crashed into a roof and it is so tall that it is hanging over the neighbor's home. crews are at the scene in fremont. they are removing branches and limbs from the tree. this one affecting people along mowry avenue. now to palo alto. this tree came crashing down along the balcony and rested on the roof of that apartment building. our chopper has been out all day and it has been a busy morning and afternoon clearing the tree limbs and try to get the power back on before it gets really cold. let's begin with first alert team coverage.>>> the good news is is that the wind has died down somewhat. the bad news is there are still quite strong across the bay area. 23 miles

chp closed down southbound lanes because of emergency pg&e work. they're actually fixing a damage line that crosses 101 between marsh and willow roads. that's the reason a lot in east palo alto are still in the dark. the work started a couple hours ago at around 2:00 in the afternoon. right now pg&e is telling us it will last for a couple more hours through the afternoon commute. it is expected to reopen at around 6:00 p.m., so that will be an area you will want to avoid because look at that. that's 101. all that red is showing that bumper to bumper traffic we just showed you there and surrounding it as well, you see 109, 114 all seeing traffic. a lot of these people trying to get on to 101. i suggest you avoid 101 altogether right now. 280 might be your best bet if you are driving from the city back to the south bay. we will keep our eyes on this and update you. all right. let's go ahead and talk about all this snow hitting the bay area. this is video of our sky ranger captured high up in the mountains near mount hamilton. so many of us across the

here is the current situation for pg&e customers. early all of the current outages are along the peninsula and making repairs means shutting down highway 101 for hours. menlo park between march and willow roads was temporarily closed. pg&e crews had to repair a damaged power line after a tree fell on it. workers first remove the tree and replaced a damaged wire. lanes in both directions reopened just before 5:00 p.m. southbound lanes reopened first at 4:45. the northbound side reopened 10 minutes later. suzanne phan joins us with impact power outages are having on the surrounding communities. >> tonight i can tell you the cars are zipping by after a temporary shutdown on highway 101. pg&e says they were able to take some important steps. thousands of people still without power but that could be changing in the next couple of hours. pockets of menlo park and east palo alto are without power and that is hurting a lot of families. >> so many people without power. private homes and businesses. it has been affecting everybody. i'm wonderi

we've got our latest update here from pg. and e you can see on the map here. >> pretty much concentrated along the peninsula down in the south bay, the santa cruz mountains in all. we're looking at about 22,000 customers still without power. the bulk of that about 20,000 of them right there on the % peninsula. let's zoom in and show you where we're seeing up again. if you look at towards san francisco, we've got a little pocket here right there. as you can see it in orange just right near it looks like manso street. so if you're in that area, obvious here, you're in the dark, this is just west of candlestick point about 500 to 5,000 customers without power. there we go south of sfo, though. and that's where we're seeing the bulk of those outages. and you can see here we're looking at a whole area right along 1, 1, to 80 between those 2 sections down near the dunbarton bridge atherton menlo park, stanford, palo alto, all those areas dealing with pockets where there's hardly any lights on at all. in fact, for more on that, let'

pg e is here continuing the clean-up work this following that gas leak and fire which burned for almost 12 hours, according to the north county fire authority around 10, 30 monday evening. neighbors here along delor boulevard reported hearing an explosion, an electrical arc. and then we also got an update that there was a concrete. >> driveway on fire. that's an unusual call. crews arriving on scene determined that a 6 inch gas main running under the sidewalk along geller was leaking. >> that the gas was burning underneath this driveway, which was actually helping to contain the fire to century. i covering the bot to spoil and with a lit. >> that congress actually helping us. it's kind of keeping the lid out. so you'll see the gas spew out along the edge of the concrete. and that's when the flame fires out of an abundance of caution. several neighbors were asked to leave their homes overnight. so we've evacuated several houses in the area we also found some housing for some residents. it you can stay in their last night and then we have a shelter in place. >> pg e also turned off electr
