weekend pg&e crews utilized a drone to pull new power lines through an access because there was snow, trees came down and the soil was saturated. >> reporter: drone operators fly the new lines in the air to recorrect them. >> with drones not only is this work becoming safer for our crews but it is also becoming more cost effective. >> reporter: pg&e says it started using the drones last spring and paid about $250,000 to lease them. pg&e says unlike costly helicopters which can be grounded during a storm, drones often can still operate. they help restore power when it snowed in sonoma county, and pg&e used them in vallejo to string 42,000 feet of static wire above an energized transmission line. eric horton lives in the santa cruz mountains and thinks anything that speeds up the process is a good idea. >> our last power outage was nine days. they need to do anything they can to improve their response time. >> reporter: and he says he hopes the drones will help minimize dangers for pg&e crews. and pg&e says they plan to use the drones again during the upcoming storm to respond to any p

that has led to sticker shock on utility bills, pg&e warning customers of a 32% spike in natural gas prices this winter compared to last. you can imagine those who cook with gas for a living are feeling the pain. we are looking at the reasons behind skyrocketing prices. >> jess is the operations manager for three downtown san jose restaurant, including farmers union. he says that many prices for these dishes like garlic shrimp have stayed the same, but the cost of making it is blowing up. not because of the cost of labor, seafood or garlic, because the chef is cooking with gas. >> a huge spike in cost. >> a look at this restaurant's utility bill including gas and electricity. zero in on the last three months. >> coming out of last year in december we were 4800, and the january of this year, cost skyrocketed 7348. subsequently this last february the bill was 12,858. >> i am not aware that we had a shock to natural gas prices anything like what we saw . >> the faculty director of the energy institute at the school of business at berkeley. >> we have had short-term price spikes. this on

and as ktvu tom vacar reports, that slide is now causing problems for pg and e.ld redwood highway just north of nevada and just above south bong highway one. oh, one suffered a substantial landslide that destroyed several 100 ft of the marginal road. if it continues moving, it could actually threatened the freeway. the road leads to and now blocks access to popular olin paulie state park. but at the gaping maw at the top of the slide a pg and e high pressure 16 inch gas pipeline, one of two such pipes up there has been exposed, forcing the utility to cut the gas pressure way down for safety . geoscience engineers and our gas pipeline engineers up there right now they're assessing the situation, but they say that there is no immediate risk to public safety. and while it's exposed that may not in and of itself today injurious. but with more rain coming and the possibility of a greater slide. that is very dangerous when the mudslide occurred. it also took out two of pg needs electric poles in the area, so we're working to repair those as well. the slide along string

how will thousands of pg e customers spent their 3rd straight night without power last night. the genie says crews have been working nonstop. they're trying to get that power back. an extra crews have been brought in from around the state and even from other utilities to help pg and e recover from what they're calling the worst storm yet years. let's take a look at the current outages this morning. and tony, you got about 32,000 still without power. the south bay has been one of the hardest hit areas with power outages. crawford's justin campbell explains why it's been really tough to get the power back up and running. >> and this is the pg and e staging area right behind me here at the santa clara county fairgrounds. you can see these trucks have been coming in and out all day. some work crews coming from out of state to help get the power back on here in the south bay. strong winds took down trees and power lines. the damage is still visible on the ground in the cam bell san jose border area leaving thousands of people without power. it's cold. and you're just hoping that it

the blocked off with pg&e crews were scattered with debris. power is out in this lafayette neighborhood near walnut creek as crews say they don't know how long it will take for them to restore power. in the montclair neighborhood, a large pine tree completely blocking off all traffic on this road. >> i couldn't leave montclair. i couldn't get down to the village to go to the store, anything like that. every wood was closed. reporter: he lived in montclair for over 60 years and says he's never seen a storm like this. >> it was these powerful gus that was just amazing, not sustained. you couldn't stand up. reporter: almost every corner, covered in damage from tuesday's storm. many roads are blocked off and numerous homes are without power. yolanda's home got damaged when her neighbor's tree fell on her deck. >> all of a sudden there was this crash and this huge tree just fell over. reporter: the wind tuesday caused part of this tree to fall. branches, scattered all over the ground. jenkins says she's fortunate only damaged her deck. the cleaning

pg and e gas pipelines exposed on a hillside in nevada. the slide happened wednesday afternoon following powerful storms now pg and e. is working to make repairs before the next round of rain moves in. that's why we're working so hard right now trying to beat the rain, you know when we're digging and excavating those holes fill up with water makes a lot harder to do our work. so we're a bit racing the clock and racing against those storms coming in in order to get this resolved. the 16 inch gas transmission lines deliver gas to 95,000 customers in marine county yamaguchi with pg and e said they need to construct and install a new gas line to reroute it away from the landslide bypass. for us, it's a temporary solution for us to allow our gas service to move away from the hazard area. until we can work on a permanent solution. excavators and other heavy machinery were brought in closure of part of south bong 101 is in effect through sunday morning. the closure includes the entrance to al and paulie state park. the rains are still coming in.

pg&e cruise are in a race against time and the elements in their attempt to reroute a main pg&e gas distribution line. we have seen some erosion in the locations due to the significant amount of rainfall we've had but this is probably the most significant event we've had during these these winter storms this week storm caused a massive landslide, which exposed to pg&e gas line, even though there hasn't been any rain in the past few days officials one that the ground continues to move that's putting pressure on the gas line forcing them to reroute it working to relocate our gas line in order to get away from that hazard so we can still have gas service to the 95,000 customers here in marion county officials say it's a massive undertaking in a short amount of time cruise have to cut through the frontage road and the highway so they ony 's aot 2,000eet ofreng it out on order to make sure that we can keep these customers in service. it's not something where we're we're actually have damage to the pipe. there is no leak there is no danger to the public crews. hope to finish the work before next week'

ama: pg&e officials confirming yesterday's widespread power outages were as bad as we thought. making it the single worst day for bay area outages in 28 years. dan: take a look at the outage map now. there are more than 140,000 customers still without electricity. more than 450,000 customers were affected to the storm related outages. officials say crews are running into issues as they spread out all over the bay area trying to get the power back on for so many people. ama: santa clara county was hit particularly hard by those outages and many schools were forced to cancel classes. dan: dustin dorsey has the details and gives you a look at the damage in the south bay. >> in a city known for its trees, you did not have to drive far in saratoga to find one down. the aftermath of yet another incredibly powerful storm. >> branches down, trees in the yard. a lot of fences down in the neighborhood, so pretty intense. dustin: just down the road, students from westmont high school shared a similar account. a larch street down in the front. one student provided live updates for her moth

reporter: pg&e says tuesday, 468,000 customers across the bay area lost power. a day later, while about three quarters have since been restored, many are still waiting for their lights to come back on. that will be about what, 30 hours? >> yeah, that's a long time. reporter: this family was no exception in alamo, her husband, now unable to work from home with no charge to their devices, let alone wi-fi. she's concerned she may have lost an entire fridge worth of food. >> the contents of the refrigerator can't be good. i haven't opened it. . but 30 hours later it can't be good. reporter: pg&e, assurant customers that they have more than 1700 crews, including some coming from other parts of the state to repair damage mostly caused by falling debris and get the lights back on. >> we are moving heaven and earth here, all crews are out working on trying to get you back on lights as quickly as possible -- in lights as quickly as possible. reporter: pg&e says with the saturated soil, it is still possible for more trees to continue to come down. if you do see any downed

pg and e. says it's all hands on deck this week. we can have crews coming from pretty much any part of our service area, which is from eureka to bakersfield. what we see during storms is vegetation or debris flying through the air , hitting our equipment and causing outages. but in downtown lafayette, a different problem with a downpour. pg and e crews had to pump water out of an underground vault. but all this rain that we've been experiencing can actually caused amateur underground system as well, and some businesses were in the dark for several hours ago, had to stop and close up shop. a sign on the door explained they had no power. others had no internet, no cash registers, and no heat went out today about 1 45. pm actually possible, rattana said. her restaurant, amarin, thai and others in lafayette have lost power three times this week. we have to close because there's no power. we cannot cook. we cannot turn out on the hood. yeah so it's not good for employees here . obviously we lose business for that amount of time. the rain

north of novato pg&e crews ar working around the clock. the mud slide began near redwood boulevard. >> the hillside is still moving. >> we've been monitoring land movement. it's consistently moved off the mountain. >> reporter: pg&e says the erosion uncovered one of its two gas lines there that service 91,000 people in marin county. the utility is rerouting the natural gas away and into a temporary bypass. >> it's a detour around. got to build a new road around a hole. >> reporter: the mud slide is also next to a north marin water main. no gas or water service has been disrupted but people living nearby are also worried about something else. >> the traffic it's going to back up. >> reporter: concerned the mud slide could make traffic even worse in the area. the already saturated hills once more rain arrives. >> i think they did a good job to move quickly. it's supposed to rain the coming week but i don't know how much ahead we'll be with it supposed to rain. >> with the wet weather returning, more land movement is possible and expected. >>
