have you seen your latest pg&e bill? a lot of customers remain angry, especially after seeing pg&e.s latest profit margin tonight. the ceo of pg&e says she's still confident that rates will come down. but the question is when? here's our business and tech reporter scott budman. scott raj. most people track pg&e by looking at their bill, and over all of 2023, the average pg&e gas and electric customer's bill went up by more than 22%. that outpaces inflation by a lot. also up pg&e quarterly profit, and that has some customers charged up as the monthly bills of most pg&e customers went up, so did company profits. my bill went to $500 $500 from what? from around $100? pg&e says the hikes were necessary to pay for wildfire safety improvements, and because the cost of doing business was rising, the latest numbers show the utility's profit shot up 28% from the previous three months, totaling $520 million for the quarter, according to the utility reform network. pg&e has multiple rate increase requests sitting on the desk of the cpuc right now, those bills will not likely drop soon. the bil

her pg&e bill spiked along with the weather last month. even though she minimally used her air conditioning. our air conditioners, set at 80 and our electric bill was $225 last month. that's a lot for some seniors on fixed incomes that bites. we expect the next set of bills, to be really challenging for a lot of households because pg&e rates have climbed so much faster than inflation. mike campbell is with the watchdog group within the public utilities commission that advocates on behalf of consumers for lower rates. he says pg&e rates have increased more than five times the rate of inflation over the past decade, and are only expected to keep climbing pg&e over the last three years, their rates have gone up by more than 50%, and over ten years they've more than doubled. they're more than 110% higher than they were ten years ago. as the climate gets warmer, ac is a must for many. we need the air conditioning or else we're going to suffer. so it's just you know, i just wish they would lower the bill. faced with another excessive heat warnin

here's a look at pg&e outage map. in the past hour, we've seen a large outage start in pleasanton, 1900 customers without power. now it just ended across the bay area. plenty of smaller outages, but overall, state officials say the power grid is stable with plenty of resources to meet demand. now, pg&e says the lights and ac are gradually coming back on. in contra costa county, we found pg&e crew doing repairs in the bollinger canyon area of san ramon this afternoon, pg&e spokesperson says the outages are likely due to failing transformers. that just didn't cool down enough during the heat. people we spoke to say today they've been looking for other ways to cool down as their homes heat up. while pg&e says they understand this heat wave is far from over, they're just trying to do what they can to keep customers lights and air conditioners on, like they had to shut down the mall. i know, and that's like a big loss for the mall. it's a big loss for all like the businesses. we're just getting started with this heat event

now, pg and e's outage map shows pg and e conducted public safety power shut offs throughout northern california, including parts of sonoma, napa and solano counties. and this morning it includes part of vacaville on peabody road. pg and e says these power shutoffs are separate from heat related outages. these shutoffs are to prevent wildfires. >> public safety officers in santa rosa are keeping a close eye on the heat, as temperatures there peaked at 107 degrees. the city's fire department says it's already responded to two grass fire this week, and that heat related injuries are a big concern. there's been a jump in the number of calls about heat exhaustion. the city is encouraging people to stay hydrated and out of the sun as much as possible. santa rosa has opened several cooling centers this week, just ahead of the high temperatures. >> finally, most of santa rosa is not prepared for a lot of heat. my house isn't very well insulated. i don't have air conditioning built in, so i have one of those portable units. >> health experts remind people to know the signs of heat exhaustion.

and pg and e is at the ready to respond to any potential heat related outages. the utility emergency operations center in vacaville has been fully staffed since saturday, and it will be for many days to come as heat and wind conditions persist. pg and e is warning of some planned shutoffs they could take place in relatively small patches of mostly remote land from redding down to fairfield. pg and e says from about 2 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow, extreme heat and strong winds could cause shutoffs to 12,000 customers. it's the combination of dry brush, strong winds that create major concern for wildfires. >> i've not seen an extended duration heat wave this long. we're seeing some areas of the service area per the meteorology team, that are going to be remaining up into the mid to high 70s in some areas in the central valley, and that's very uncharacteristic. >> officials say climate change is causing heat waves to slow down as they move and stay over areas longer. they happen more frequently and at higher temperatures, they last about four days, longer than 45 years

she's from pg&e. so what is the current situation with outages. how many do you have going on right now i just checked before we got on the air. and at this time throughout the bay area we have about 6300 customers impacted the majority of those are in the south bay. about 4700 customers impacted in the south bay at this time. okay, so what's driving the outages? because we don't have a flex alert. so we the power grid is not being stressed. so what is getting the stress that we're seeing these outages. we saw them yesterday. we saw them even on monday before we'd even seen the 100 100 temperatures. yes. this is primarily due to transformer failure. when we see temperatures this high that don't cool down overnight. that's when you start to see equipment fail, because they really do need the chance to cool down overnight. that's how it typically works. and when we don't get that opportunity, equipment can overheat and lead to outages. so is there something you can do to keep the equipment from overheating? i mean, is there another avenue that you c
