and the new year brings a new rate for your pg&e bill. yep. the reason it already went up when we hit a $2 million fine for repeated delays. the agency says the carrier delayed flights along east coast routes at least 144 times from june 2022 through november 2023. half the cash will go to passengers who were delayed. jetblue says its on-time rate has improved and urged the incoming administration to invest in improving air traffic control. you're not going to like this one. pg&e kicking off the new year with another rate hike, but also a rate decrease. all right. utility company says monthly gas rates will go up by an average of $9 starting this month. it says it has to fund safety improvements that include replacing pipelines and using advanced technology to quickly detect and fix gas leaks. however, pg&e says the average electric rate will go down for most people, but it will be $1 less. you will still be $8 on average in the hole, though. low income customers in the care program will see a decrease of $8.50. so that's good news. cracking d

well, pg&e crews had their hands full in san francisco this morning. there was a gas leak at the laguna honda hospital. it happened a little after 11 a.m. this morning. the sf department of public health says a contractor ruptured a gas line while doing work outside. san francisco firefighters helped evacuate staff in the administration building, but patients in the hospital building were not affected and did not have to leave. within 30 minutes, all evacuated staff went back inside. pg&e was on scene shortly after to shut off the gas line and repair the damaged pipe. president biden and first lady jill biden are in new orleans tonight. that city's mayor and other leaders greeted them at the airport this afternoon. here's a look at that. the president and the first lady will attend a prayer service tonight. it's hosted by the archdiocese of new orleans. now they will also meet privately with families of victims and community members, as well as first responders and law enforcement. 14 people died and 30 more were injured before the attacker was killed

pg&e crews are in southern california helping out. they're now working to protect power lines down there. dylan thomas has that story. >> reporter: on the side of the 405 freeway in bel-air. dozens of employees from pacific gas and electric are working to get ahead of the palisade fire. >> yeah, we are way ahead from the fire. >> reporter: these crews have driven hours from their homes to help los angeles protect their power grid. >> our job is to try to get out along the fire's edge out if front of where the fire may go. >> reporter: one at a time, pg&e teams would work to clear the overgrown vegetation. it has consumed the ground in each poll. with tools like this rhino and chain saws, the crews clear at least two feet around the base of each power pole. and remove any other shrubbery that will come close to touching them. and then the fun part. spraying each pole. >> without hitting the equipment. >> reporter: the area around it with fire retardants. >> it's the same thing that will come out of the air tanker. that way if they do m

the white sedan officers were chasing also crashed, knocking out a light pole and damaging a pg&e gas metering box. according to a pg&e spokesperson, no gas lines were damaged and no customer service was ever affected. the spokesperson says it's a non-critical piece of equipment, but it will need to be replaced. the incident has some raising questions about when police chases should and shouldn't be allowed. according to the police statement, this is a chase that actually started a few miles away in the south of market district. officers spotted the suspicious vehicle that ran away from an attempted stop earlier this weekend. police say they also found a gun in the car while charges are pending in this case. an sfpd spokesperson did not say what crimes the two men were arrested for. last ye, san francisco voters approved measure e, which now allows officers to chase suspects for all felonies and violent misdemeanors in san francisco. sergio quintana, nbc, bay area news. our other top story tonight more dangerous fire conditions down in la, and that means more homes and lives could be

pg&e expects to have all that restored by seven tonight. well, a standoff that resulted in a police shooting has now ended in oakland. it all started around five this morning on macarthur boulevard near 66th avenue. police union says a sergeant confronted a man firing a rifle, but then he shot at the sergeant. the sergeant shot and wounded the man during a chase. the suspect then ran into a nearby apartment building. macarthur was shut down between 65th and 69th avenue for hours while police tried to get him to surrender, which he did. eventually, the suspect was taken to the hospital and is stable. three people are recovering tonight after a shooting in downtown oakland happened just after seven last night on harrison street. police say three people were shot. they all were rushed to the hospital, one treated for critical injuries. the other two are in much better shape than that. the motive for the shooting is still under investigation. no arrests have been made. well, the late former president jimmy carter's public farewell has begun tod
