cnn legal analyst kelly phelps joins us live from pretoria on what we can expect. and kelly, what is the chance he may take the stand today and what is at stake for him if and when he does? >> well, there is a very good chance he will take the stand today. that is because there is a rule in south african law if the accused wants to work on his case he risks about the decision to wait and sort of play his cards and see how his witnesses perform. so we all for all intents and purposes expecting to see him today. and really, this will be the first time in a 15-day trial so far that we've actually heard his voice in court. and since he first pled not guilty. >> and what is at stake for him? we have certainly seen him break down during this trial, the very emotional get sick. and now he is taking the stand. how might his lawyers have prepared him for this? >> i imagine they have been preparing him for quite a number of months now. having said that, i don't think anything can really prepare someone for the moment that they take the stand and face their accusers in court.

. >> cnn legal analyst kelly phelps has been following this trial from the start. she joins us now live from pretoria with more we can expect. we have seen oscar pistorius break down so far in this trial. as the defense begins, as he perhaps take the stand, what aspects of that story tom just laid out will he have to really, really nail as he gives his version of events? >> well, the two most important factors in his testimony really are first of all, consistency and second of all, sincerity and believability. consistency will be key. because unusually for an accused person, he gave a lot of details about his version of events very early on. even at the bail hearing. and so far he has stuck to that version of events in his opening statement and he has managed to reinforce that version of events through cross-examination. his defense counsel's cross-examination. now that it is him on the stand he will need to maintain that consistency in the face of what is likely to be very aggressive cross-examination. >> when we hear the cross-examination, what will the prosecuto

kelly phelps is a cnn legal analyst and with the university of cape town law faculty. biggest headline from this first week of trial? >> well, there were a number of memorable moments. i think first of all, the fact that the states claim the defense claim is based on the fact that mr. pistorius sounds like a woman when he screams. i think the first time this was heard in court, people reacted that it was quite implausible, but then you had the second witness, the neighbor come under the stand and actually although she was testifying for the state, she said in part of her testimony that she heard a woman screaming. she asked her husband to check who it was and he came back and said it was oscar pistorius. she said, oh, i thought it was a woman screaming. so, already seem to be these competing versions of events managing to gain traction in the court. >> what would that mean? what would be the interpretation of these kind of details from the eyewitness or earwitnesses? >> well, it's important because it plays into the two opposing versions of events being put forward. th
