s phi kappa psi fraternity. the story led school officials to suspend all fraternities for the semester. phi kappa psi was vandalized. but as other outlets began to investigate, discrepancies emerged. jackie told "rolling stone" for instance, she was attacked while attending a date function with a fraternity member she met while working lifeguard shifts together at the university pool. in a statement, phi kappa psi said today, "as far as we have determined, no member of our fraternity worked at the aquatic center in any capacity during this time period. and the chapter did not have a date function or social event during the weekend of september 28, 2012." today, "rolling stone's" manage editor will dana released this statement, "there now appear to be discrepancies in jackie's account, and we have come to the conclusion that our trust in her was misplaced." some of those discrepancies might have come to light sooner if the magazine had reached out to jackie's alleged attackers. but dana says "we decided to honor

the fraternity, phi kappa psi, disputed parts of her story and... >> the chapter did not have a datection or a scoail event during the weekend of september 28, 2012. ...there was no social event at the house on the night in question. we invited "rolling stone" and the reporter whom we interviewed before about this to appear tonight. we also invited the university of virginia. all declined. reporter taylor rees shapiro broke part of this story for the washington post. he joins me from a university studio in charlottesville. and we welcome you to the program. taylor rees shapiro, this is an horrific story as it was first reported. what parts of the alleged victim's account have now been called into question? >> well, it's been called into question the dates -- first of all, the date she said it occurred. she said ito curved september 28, 2012 which would have been early on her freshman year in campus. the fraternity released a statement they had not hosted any parties that entire weekend which calls into question the timing of what she said the allegations had occurred. in addition, it

on september 28, 2012, was allegedly gang raped at a fraternity party by seven men pledging for phi kappa psi. but there was no party and that they don't have pledges in the fall. and "the washington post" reports the men jackie claims took her to the party and orchestrated the rape wasn't a member of phi kappa psi. and while he knows her he has never taken her anywhere. she never contacted the alleged attackers because jackie asked her not to. as of yesterday rolling stone was fine with that saying it found jackie's story entirely credible and courageous. now the magazine is backpeddling saying, "there now appear to be discrepancies in jackie's account, and we have come to the conclusion that our trust in her was misplaced. we regret not contacting the alleged assaulters to get their accounts." even friends of jackies who fight to raise awareness, told the writer there were seven. the university of virginia says it still plans to deal with sexual assault on campus saying "we will continue to take a hard look at our practices, policies and procedures and continue to dedicate ourselves to beco

we just got that statement from the phi kappa psi fraternity. and what was said?inutes ago got an updated statement from the fraternity saying the fraternity and university officials actually contacted charlottesville police and were working with them weeks before the article came out about this specific allegation. i want to read more of that statement fred while i have it here. it says while individuals undergraduate members of the chapter were contacted by the rolling stone writer to comment on the, quote, gang rape at phi psi they provide nod information thuz they had no information to provide. to my knowledge no member was contacted by the rolling stone fact checkers. this is coming like you said a day after rolling stone appears to be dialing back, stepping away from reporting on the story and also stepping back from the woman who was at the center of that piece. >> after an article that prompted outrage at the university of virginia, rolling stone magazine has apologized for discrepancies about an alleged gang rape on the campus. editors said they made the
