i'm phil lebeau withic breaking news. let's look at shares of toyota they've been under extreme pressure in the last half hour, following ray la hood. the stock down more than $5, more than 6% on the day and they started tanking after these comments from the transportation secretary when he was asked what advice he would give those toyota owners who have recalled cars. >> my advice is if anyone owns one of these vehicles, stop driving it, take it to the toyota dealer because they believe they have the fix for it. >> the transportation secretary la hood also says he would like to meet with the ceo of toyota. he also believes they need to keep the pressure on the company to show, quote, how serious we are, the we being the transportation department, how serious we are about what's happening with toyota. all of this as toyota shops around the country prepare to start repairing these vehicles perhaps as soon as this weekend. secretary secretary lahood was also asked about whether or not electronics are a part of the problem a

phil lebeau joins us from illinois.s to be the kind of news that hits the dealers and salespeople so hard that they're pulling them off the roads. it's not a good sales pitch. >> reporter: it's more of a pr hit than anything else, contessa. washington case is only six priuses, not a large fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles. nonetheless, those types of stories, as they go out, it brings up the question again and again, are they safe to drive? toyota has said time and again, the vehicles are safe to drive, they're looking into the issue regarding the brakes. there have been 124 complaints filed with the federal government, four accidents reported to washington. that's what the national highway traffic safety administration is looking into. what caused these problems with the prius brakes? many people who filed these complaints have said they don't react right away. if you hit a bump in the road and hit the brake there's a delay there and as a result you get the feeling your brakes are failing. that's what they and toy

phil lebeau joins you us from capitol hill. toyota releasing his opening statements yesterday. sounds like he's start with apologizing. >> we'll hear a lot of apologies from akio toyoda. we'll hear from him and other toyota executives that they are recommitted to making sure quality and safety are number one with this company. he's playing out a plan for how the company will try and avoid massive recalls in the future, that involves establishing a quality control committee that will have representatives from all over the world, including north america. there were a number of questions yesterday from congressional leaders saying how come japan didn't notify toyota executives in the i'd sooner that there might be this problem regarding unintended acceleration. so we'll hear a number of heated questions where they ask why toyota didn't move quicker. but i think there will be two people there answering questions, akio toe yyoda and m anabi. mr. toyoda will be setting the standard of we apologize and we'll do better in the future. >> phil lebeau, thank you. >>> we are 24 hours away
