phil lebeau is in chicago with the details. everyone's got a recall. >> there are tons of recalls that happen every single day and the vast majority of them are service bulletins and this one is getting more arc tension because of the climate out there right now. general motors recalling 1.3 million compact cars. the majority of these are cobalts made between 2005 and 2010. this news coming out on a day when general motors reported february sales that are weaker than the street was expecting. general motors reporting sales in increase of 11.5% last month and the street was expecting 24%. february is always a weak month so you don't want to read too much into these statistics and here's one stat that will get a lot of attention. the average transaction price in february up $4,000 per vehicle compared to a year ago. that's the kind of number that wall street wants to see. as we take a look at estimates for the other two automakers of the big three. keep in mind, chrysler is expected to be down 13% and still working over a lot of

cnbc's phil lebeau covers the auto industry for us. what can we expect to see tomorrow? you're going to see a number of lawyers who are representing class action lawsuits. and there have been about 118 filed around the country. many of those lawyers will appear at this courtroom in san diego. that's where a panel of judges will decide do we put this all into one giant class action suit, a national class action suit? and if so, where will it be heard? what's the jurisdiction? who is the judge who will oversee that case? so the implications here are that this is the beginning of what could be a very costly process for toyota because when you're looking at these class action suits the potential here is damages that could go into billions of dollars for toyota, depending on the outcome of the cases. some people are seeking everything from restitution for diminished value of a vehicle and want toyota to pay them back because they believe their vehicle is unsafe to drive. some people are seeking money because they believe toyota should have notified sooner about potential defe

cnbc's phil lebeau joins us from chicago with more. hey, phil. >> hey, joe.s is going to be a troubling area for toyota over the next several months. the class action suits could be where the company pays the biggest amount of money in terms of woes facing the company. when you look at all the legal cases and the ones mounting, about 80, across the country, is totals 118 class action cases. and then you've got 36 individual cases, also grand jury investigation. the individual cases includes a family out of dallas, texas. the husband who was driving a toyota, it crashed the day after christmas. four died in this crash. the car sped up, went through a fence, flipped over and landed in a lake. monty hardy's family, the driver, his family claims the avalon he was driving was defective. >> i don't want any other family to lose their husband, their wife, their children or anyone in an accident like i lost my husband. i lost my best friend. i lost my husband who i've been married to for 35 years. and it's pretty rough. >> as tough as it will be for people to hear th
